Resources for Graduate Student Parents and Families
An introduction:
Family and Parent Resources is a new service offered by the Boston College Graduate Student Association (GSA) for the purpose of providing support for graduate students who are balancing family life and parenting responsibilities along with their academic work at Boston College. We believe that it is important to serve the diverse needs of graduate students while supporting them in reaching their personal and professional goals and we recognize that students with families often face additional challenges. One of the ways that Family and Parent Resources serves students with families is by collaborating with the GSA and the Office of Graduate Student Life to provide parent and family-friendly programming. Family and Parent Resources also serves as a liaison with other campus organization and works on behalf of graduate students with families to increase support and resources from these other organizations.
We hope to provide useful information from around campus and around town in one easy location. We understand that along with practical information about housing, vehicle registration, and daycare or public school registration, students want information about fun activities to participate in with their families. We hope that by providing graduate students with a resource that is tailored to family activities and family-relevant information, graduate students with families will be better able to balance their personal and professional lives.
During the 2011-2012 academic year, we will be planning family-friendly get-togethers on campus in conjunction with GSA events like tailgate parties in the fall. We will also coordinate activities off campus, giving students with families many opportunities to meet up with each other during visits to popular places like the Boston Children’s Museum and the New England Aquarium.
