Osha Health & Safety Programs

Hazard Communication Program

The OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) provides employees information regarding hazardous chemicals, substances and physical dangers in the workplace. Under this law, employers (supervisors) are required to inform and train their employees about the hazards of certain substances that they routinely work with or are potentially exposed to. Supervisors must make sure that certain information, such as labels and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs), is always available to the users of those substances.

Confined Space Entry Program

The OSHA Permit-Required Confined Space Standard (29 CFR 1910.146) requires that the College protect workers from hazards encountered when entering confined spaces. The program requires identifying and labeling confined spaces, training and ensuring that proper testing, documentation, communication and equipment is used when entering confined spaces.

Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Program

The OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) protects workers from bloodborne pathogens (BBP) encountered during contact with blood or other bodily fluids called potentially infectious materials (OPIM). An exposure control plan, worker training and engineering controls have been developed by Boston College to ensure worker safety compliance in accordance with the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard. The program applies to those departments, employees and work functions that result in an occupational exposure to BBP.

Training

In addition to the training conducted in the programs described above, Boston College provides employee training as required by the following OSHA Standards:

Powered Industrial Trucks (Forklift) - OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178
The Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout) - OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147
