About the Office of the Dean of Students

Welcome to Boston College!

On behalf of the Office of the Dean of Students (DOS), I would like to welcome you to Boston College. Your decision to attend a Jesuit, Catholic University will provide you with many opportunities to grow intellectually, personally, socially, and spiritually. I invite you to make the most out of your Boston College education by partaking of the many resources that are available to develop your leadership skills and to engage with faculty and administrators, as we are looking forward to participating in your growth and development.

As we begin a new academic year, I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the Student Guide (available online at www.bc.edu/studentguide). It outlines your rights and responsibilities as a student and the community standards for which you will be held accountable. If you have questions or concerns about any of the information provided in the guide, feel free to stop by the Office of the Dean of Students, Maloney Hall, Suite 450 or contact us at deanofstudents@bc.edu. We are a great resource for students, particularly as we address a variety of issues including students in crisis or distress, off campus student life, civility and respect, inclusion, disability, gender and sexuality, diversity, and student behavior.

I hope you will embrace all the richness of our diverse community. Best of luck in all of your endeavors here at Boston College.

Sincerely yours,
Tom Mogan, Ph.D.

Purpose & Mission

The staff in the Office of the Dean of Students (DOS) are here to enhance the quality of student life outside the classroom. We encourage every student to take advantage of the multiple opportunities for leadership development, volunteer service, student activity programming, and multicultural activities. DOS aims to facilitate the creation of a happy, respectful, and productive community of student scholars.

Many of the lifelong memories that students will keep of their time at Boston College will be of experiences outside the classroom. We encourage students to reach beyond their grasp and develop to their full potential.

DOS is also concerned about moral, ethical, and spiritual development. The Dean of Students holds students to a very high standard of academic and personal behavior that will respect the community standards inherent to a Catholic, Jesuit institution. We want students to learn to make wise and responsible decisions based upon personal reflection and communication with peers and mentors.

The world needs leaders for tomorrow. The Office of the Dean of Students helps students develop the skills and qualities that will allow them to provide this leadership.
