Preparing for a Career Fair

A career fair is a great opportunity for students of any major to connect with employers, learn about job and internship openings, and practice your networking skills. Here are some tips on making the most of your career fair experience.
BEFORE YOU GO
- Identify the type of jobs that appeal to you. Target your resume and your talking points to the type of job you want, and develop a presentation statement that highlights your strengths.
- Research employers. Get a list of employers attending the career fair, and find out more about them by checking their websites and other resources. Decide in advance which employers you’d like to approach at the career fair, and compile a list of questions.
- Plan what to wear. Wear a suit if you’re meeting with employers in a formal business; for less formal work environments, slacks or a skirt with a blouse or sweater is fine. No matter what, your clothes should be clean and pressed. For more information, see What to Wear or check with the Career Center staff.
- Make sure your resume is in good shape. Attend a resume workshop at the Career Center, schedule an appointment with a career counselor, or check our tips on writing a good resume.

AT THE CAREER FAIR
- Strategize. Review the list of employers, identify your top targets, and plan your time so that you connect with the employers that are most relevant to you.
- Make a good first impression. Don’t chew gum. Drink some water and grab a mint so that you'll pass the "fresh test." Approach employers with a firm handshake. Remember to stand tall, make eye contact and smile.
- Ask relevant questions. Show that you’ve done your homework by asking questions based on your knowledge of the career field and the employer.
- Offer your resume and ask for a business card. Some employers won’t accept resumes at a career fair, in which case you should ask how you can get your resume in front of the right person at the company.
- Ask for additional sources of information. Employers at the career fair may be able to refer you to people, websites, professional associations, and other useful resources.
AFTER THE CAREER FAIR
- Follow up. Send thank-you notes promptly to employers who were of particular interest to you. Include your resume, and reiterate your interest in their organization and/or job. You can also contact employers you missed at the career fair.
- Keep working. Continue networking, conducting informational interviews, and using our search strategies to find a job. And you can always schedule an appointment with a career advisor at the Career Center.
