American Heart Association Undergraduate Student Research Program

  • Program offers students to explore careers in heart or stroke research in cardiovascular research laboratories in California, Nevada or Utah for 10 weeks during the summer to work under the supervision of experienced scientists. Projects range from basic molecular research to direct physiological studies. Some opportunities for participation in more clinical investigations also available.
  • This program is open to students of Junior or Senior status enrolled in a college or university at time of application, attend an institution in California, Nevada or Utah or be a resident of one of these states. Must have completed a combined total of at least four semesters of six quaters of biological sciences, physics or chemistry. Must have completed at least one quarter of calculus, statistics, computational methods or computer science.
  • $4000 stipend for 10 weeks of summer research (as of 2002-2003 academic year).

Alvan T.-Viola D. Fuller American Cancer Society Research Fellowships

  • The Fuller Fellowship offers undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in laboratory research with accomplished investigators and recieve a stipend of $4,000.
  • Fellowships last a minimum of ten weeks and are equivalent to full-time summer employment.
  • Applicants must be: Residents of New England (CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, or VT) and enrolled in a four-year undergraduate program, which may be outside of New England, Sophomores and juniors (favorable weighting given to those with advanced science course work), Lab skill and interest in research required.
  • Minority students are encouraged to apply.

Epidemiology Fellowship (Scroll to bottom of page)

  • Lincoln Park Zoo is offering a one year (with potential one year extension) fellowship in Epidemiological Disease Surveillance as part of the Davee Center for Veterinary Epidemiology and Endocrinology at Lincoln Park Zoo. This position will implement program goals for North American zoological surveillance programs, specifically avian influenza, West Nile virus and tuberculosis, collaborate with all other LPZ C&S Centers, especially the AZA population management center, and link between AZA and external partners such as USDA, CDC, USGS etc.
  • Graduate degree in epidemiology, research experience and experience managing large surveillance networks required; medical degree (MD/DVM) and post graduate epidemiology training preferred. Training in epidemiological study design, surveillance and risk assessment / modeling.Experience participating in and/or leading large collaborative projects/workshops

The Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) Laboratory Fellowship Program

  • The Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory Fellowship Program prepares laboratory scientists for careers in public health.
  • Two-track program (one-year training and two-year research fellowship) trains qualified candidates (bachelor's and master's level) to support public health initiatives
  • Ideal candidates have laboratory experience and interest in public health.
  • Fellows are placed in local, state, and federal (CDC) public health laboratories.
  • The annual stipend (2005) begins at $28,000 for fellows with bachelor's degrees and $31,000 for fellows with master's degrees (subject to change).
  • The application deadline is usually in February

Environmental Careers Organization

  • ECO places approximately 400 interns each year in environmental "internships," though most of these pay quite well and provide good entry-level opportunities for graduating seniors.
  • There is no fee to apply.
  • If you are a college junior, senior or graduate student, OR you have completed your Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's or Ph.D. degree within the last three years, you are eligible.
  • Internships last from 3 months to 2 years.
  • Average stipend is $425 per week (as of 2002-2003 academic year).

Hudson River Foundation - Tibor T. Polgar Summer Fellowships

  • Fellowships of $3,800 each provide support for graduate or undergraduate students to conduct research on the Hudson River.
  • Objectives include the gathering of important information on all aspects of the river and to train students in conducting estuarine studies and public policy research. Limited research funds are also provided.
  • Deadline: usually February.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - Environmental Management Studies Fellowship Program

  • Opportunities in research, environmental awareness projects, environmental law, PR and communications, computer programming, etc. (part time and full time available)

Global Change Education Program - US Dept. of Energy Fellowship/Scholarship

  • For students interested in research ecology, atmospheric sciences, climatology, computer modeling, earth system processes, etc.
  • Includes SURE (Summer Undergrad. Research Experience), GREF (Graduate Research Environmental Fellowships) and SOARS (Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science)
  • Stipends, housing and transportation allowances, financial aid for grad school available

Hartford Hospital

  • Pre-medical student are offered an introduction to research methodology, patient treatment, and ethical issues in medicine as well as exposure to a broad spectrum of health care providers within a large community teaching hospital.
  • The program takes place from June - August (ten weeks).
  • Eligibility: Pre-med students completing their junior or senior year by the end of May.
  • The closing date for receipt of the completed application is mid February.

Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation Post-Bachelor Fellowship Program

  • The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington is looking for recent college graduates with strong quantitative skills to train with faculty and senior researchers on a variety of global health projects
  • Fellowship Program involves a minimum of a two-year commitment commencing with training and orientation.
  • Fellows receive a monthly stipend of $2,667 as well as access to medical benefits, libraries, and recreation facilities at the University of Washington.
  • No background in global health or related field is required, but student should have a strong interest in pursuing academic or professional careers related to global health.
  • Application Deadline: usually end of January.

Knowles Science Teaching Foundation, Fellowship in Teaching High School Science

  • The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quantity of high quality science and mathematics teachers.
  • Fellows should have received their most recent degree within the past five years. Also an applicant might be in the final year of an undergraduate, masters, combined BS with MAT or M.Ed. program or near the completion of their doctoral program. Applicants who will be in their first year of teaching in academic year 2006-2007 are also eligible.

National Institutes of Health-University of Oxford and National Institutes of Health- University of Cambridge Scholars and Biomedical Research Program

  • The NIH/Oxford/Cambridge Scholars Program is looking to fully fund students who wish to pursue a MD/PhD degree.
  • Students can attend one of the 41 medical schools affiliated with the NIH's Medical Scientist Research Training Program.
  • Students will attend NIH for 2 years, and Oxford or Cambridge University for 2 more years.
  • Tuition, stipend, travel, health insurance, and more will be fully supported by the program.

National Network For Environmental Management Studies Fellowship Program (NNEMS), EPA

  • NNEMS provides students with practical research opportunities and experiences in an EPA office or laboratory.
  • Recipients of NNEMS fellowships receive a stipend based on the student's level of education and the duration and location of the project.

Student Conservation Association

  • SCA sponsors several conservation and environmental programs, mainly in national parks, forests and wildlife refuges. Undergraduates and recent alumni are eligible for the program.
  • SCA now offers AmeriCorps education awards of between $1,180 to $4,725 to individuals who successfully complete an SCA Conservation Internship. The award can be applied toward existing college loans or future tuition. Plus, your students get college loan deferment and SCA's generous financial package of travel, housing, a weekly living allowance and insurance.
Division of Adolescent Medicine Social Work Fellowship, Children's Hospital Boston
  • Full-time fellowship offering advanced trining in clinical practice, teaching, and community outreach under a  federal grant for Leadership Education in Adolescent Health.
  • Fellow will be responsible for mental health assessment, consultation, crisis intervention and treatment, and will also receive training and experience in the the evaluation and treatment of eating disorders.

General Mills Technology Scholars Award

  • General Mills and  the United Negro College Fund have partnered to offer the General Mills Technology Scholars Award which provides a $5,000 scholarship for the upcoming academic year.
  • Application Deadline: March 31, 2008
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 and limited to majors in various types of engineering, computer science, and management information systems.
  • Students will be selected based on academic performance, career aspirations, demonstrated leadership, and achievement.
