Assistant Director Training Program - Directors Guild

  • The mission of the Directors Guild – Producer Training Plan is to provide motion picture and television industry training as directed by the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers and the Directors Guild of America.
  • Designed to provide opportunities for a limited number of individuals to become Assistant Directors of motion pictures.
  • This is a two year program consisting of up to 350 days of on-the job training combined with seminars and special assignments. A rotation system places Trainees on the sets of various features, television series and commercials shooting primarily in the New York City vicinity.

The American Prospect Writing Fellowship

  • The American Prospect is a national, bimonthly magazine that focuses on politics, policy and culture. The magazine offers six yearlong grants of $20,000 each to writers under 30 who exhibit the drive and motivation to become critical journalists and public intellectuals.
  • Throughout the year, participants will create two to four articles for The American Prospect and two to four articles for other national magazines.

Chesterfield Fellowship - Writers Film Project - NOTE: This project is currently on hiatus.

  • The Writers Film Project offers fiction, theatre, and film writers the opportunity to begin a career in screenwriting. Up to five writers will be chosen to participate, and each will receive a stipend to cover his or her living expenses.
  • The Writer's Film Project is one of the most popular and prestigious screenwriting fellowships in the United States. The WFP was originated by Chesterfield at Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment.
  • Eligibility Requirements: There are no strict eligibility requirements for the Writer's Film Project. Fiction, theatre, and film writers may apply. There are no age or academic requirements, and applicants need not be affiliated with a university to participate.

The Delay the Real World Fellowship

  • Sponsored by Running Press Publishers, is a $2,500 award for whoever proposes the most gutsy and worthwhile adventure. The winner could be anything from a health educator in Thailand, to a ski instructor in Switzerland, to an organic farmer in New Mexico. The most crucial pre-requisite is a passion for something that the 9-5 grind doesn't offer.

Eric Breindel College and University Journalism Award

  • Internship of student's choice at either Fox News Channel or the New York Post.
  • $10,000 cash prize.
  • Winner announced in June

Gannett Co., Inc. 

  • Gannett Co., Inc. is skeeing high performing and talented individuals to support its strategic plan.
  • We are building a long-term program that provides a pipeline of diverse and exceptional talent by recruiting, hiring, and developing a select group of the nation's top December 2008 and Spring 2009 graduating college students. This program is also open to graduate students completing their sudies during this time period.
  • The 2009 training program will begin with an orientation at Gannett's headquarters on June 4-5. Participants will be trained for 10 weeks as full-time employees at Gannett daily newspapers, television stations, and corporate headquarters in McLean, VA.  At the successful completion of the training, participants will be offered a full-time position.

Georgia O'Keeffe Museum Research Center

  • The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum Research Center awards stipends to historians in the fields of art, architecture & design, literature, music, and photography and to museum or other professionals who wish to have or extend curatorial experience.
  • Stipends are awarded to (a) doctoral candidates who have fulfilled all preliminary requirements for the Ph.D. and are under the direction of a faculty member from their own institution and (b) scholars who hold a doctorate, have distinguished themselves in their field, and wish to pursue research.

The Hearst Broadcast News Fellowship

  • Hearst-Argyle Television, Inc. conducts on the job training program in broadcast journalism for those who are minorities or disadvantaged and who are minorities who have encountered substantial difficulties in gaining access to broadcast careers as a result.
  • Applicants must have at least a BA or BS degree and proven interest in broadcast journalism.
  • A transcript and three letters of recommendation are required as well as a statement detailing why the applicant chose to pursue broadcast journalism and why they deserve the fellowship.

Howard Simons Graduate Fellowship

  • The Howard Simons Graduate Fellowship at the University of Maryland was created to expand opportunities for minority journalists in the newspaper industry. It's a 12-month masters program in public affairs reporting, and the fellowship covers tuition, fees plus a stipend for living expenses
  • Deadline: usually March
IRTS Foundation Summer Fellowship Program
  • The International Radio & Television Society Foundation Fellowship Program teaches up-and-coming communicators the realities of the business world in the fields of communications and media.
  • Fellows gain "real world" experience at New York-based media companies while also taking related field trips, attending panels and lectures, and the opportunity to network with industry professionals.
  • Travel, housing, and living allowance included.
  • This Fellowship program is competitive. Students must be college juniors, seniors or graduate students at the time of application.

Massachusetts Media Fellowships

  • Sponsored by the Boston Film/Video Foundation, the Massachusetts Media Fellowship Program offers grants of up to $7500 (as of 2002-2003 academic year) for the production of an independent film and video by New England media artists.
  • The grants support new works or works in progress of all genres, by individuals whose works reveal potential of their artisitc abilities.
  • Potential applicants must be 18 or older and reside in any of the six New England states for at least one year.

Metropolitan Museum of Art Internships

  • Applicants must be graduating seniors or recent graduates in art history or related fields. Grad students are also eligible.
  • The sponsors several internship programs, ranging from 3 - 9 months in length.

The Nation Internships

  • The Nation Internship offers college students and recent graduates, interested in magazine journalism and publishing, an opportunity to gain practical editorial experience and comprehensive exposure to the publishing aspect of the magazine's production.
  • Interns attend bi-weekly seminars to meet and learn from genuine authors, journalists and politicians.
  • Internships are offered during the summer and academic year, and carry a small stipend. Majority of the internships are held in New York, however there is one opportunity available in Washington D.C. All ages are welcome, yet most interns have completed their junior year of college.

The National Interest Editorial Fellowship

  • Designed for recent college graduates in the fields of journalism and international affairs
  • The one year program gives three junior editors the opportunity to learn about Washington's foreign policy community and develop production and editing skills
  • Apprentice editors also work on National Interest online, the magazine's newly-launched website
  • Eligibility: graduating seniors and recent college graduates (within one year of graduation) with degrees in journalism, the humanities or social sciences, international affairs, and related fields
  • Prior editing or journalism experience is welcome but not required

The New Republic Internship for College Graduates

  • The New Republic seeks recent college grads for full-time nine-month internships starting in September.
  • Applicants must have good organizational skills, excellent research abilitity, and experience writing both news and opinion.

Newhouse Fellow Program for Minorities

  • Graduate Newspaper Fellowship and Apprenticeship for Minorities
  • Free tuition; $1100 a month stipend; health insurance; up to $3300 in other benefits (as of 2002-2003 academic year).
  • Full-time paid professional internship after graduation for one year as a reporter at a Newhouse newspaper.

The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer - Desk Assistant Program

  • An entry-level program designed for recent college graduates seeking practical experience at a nightly national news organization.
  • This position is divided into five rotations among the different units that comprise the NewsHour: newsdesk; wires; research; setup unit; and viewer mail.
  • Seven desk assistants are accepted twice a year; the position runs approximately 6 months.

NPR Kroc Fellowship

  • Purpose: work alongside some of the nation's most respected reporters, producers, and editors.
  • Candidates must be in their last year of a 4 year college, graduate school or out of school for one year or less.
  • Prior experience in radio or journalism is not necessary - but candidates MUST demonstrate exceptional potential.
  • Application Deadline: December 31 (for the following year)
  • The Fellowship begins in August and lasts for one year.

Orchestra Management Fellowship Program

  • Provides promising management talent with a full year of on-the-job experience balanced with course work and leadership training.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated musical knowledge, management skills, proven organizational and communication skills, maturity, confidence, and the ability to work independently as well as with diverse groups.
  • Participating Fellows receive a $25,000 stipend, travel reimbursement and health benefits (as of November 2003).

Peabody Essex Museum

  • The Peabody Essex Museum is an international museum of art, architecture and culture located in Salem, MA. One of the largest museums in New England, the Peabody Essex is home to 11 collections that number more than 400,000 objects, 3 million books, manuscripts and works of art on paper.
  • Museum Educators are sought for both internships AND full-time, post-graduation jobs. Daily responsibilities include delivering up to four public or school programs per day in the peak tourist season. Most of the programs delivered by Educators focus on the museum's historic houses and include public tours, lectures on the witchcraft trials, period birthday parties, and theatrical productions. Post-graduation employees also take a role in supervising local youth who participate in career training at the museum and in exhibit interpretation.

Peggy Guggenheim Collection Internship Program

  • An opportunity for students from different cultures to gain practical experience of museology and familiarity with an important collection of modern art in Venice, Italy.
  • Living expenses covered. Varies by length of stay.
  • Students learn together in a creative international atmosphere and acquaint themselves with the life and culture of Venice
  • Candidates must be fluent in both Italian and English and be an international university student (non-Italian citizens) majoring in art, art history or a related area

Poynter Institute News Reporting & Writing Fellowship

  • Summer program that runs from June - July.
  • Application Deadline: usually early December.
  • This program offers unparalleled opportunity for learning and growth for those graduating seniors or recent college graduates who see their future in journalism.
  • During the program, students will learn to originate stories in a town they barely know, to sell stories to editors, and to gather and convey information in a hurry.

Pulliam Journalism Fellowships

  • Fellows will work for a summer as reporters, editorial writers or copy editors, depending on their areas of interest and experience at The Indianapolis Star or The Arizona Republic.
  • A cash grant and a stipend are for $6,500
  • Those eligible for the fellowship hold a bachelor's degree and are newspaper journalism majors or liberal arts majors with newspaper experience.
  • Deadline: usually early March. Early Decision usually mid November.

The Ruder Finn Public Relations Executive Training Program

  • Offered three times a year in its New York City headquarters, of 3 - 5 months duration. The Executive Training Program is for college graduates who have at least a Bachelor's Degree.
  • Executive Trainees work full-time and also attend weekly classes. As integral members of account teams, Executive Trainees gain exposure to every facet of the public relations business.
  • The Executive Training Program is very well-known. Entry level employees rarely are hired by Ruder Finn without having completed the Program. The company hires the best graduates of the program to fill its Assistant Account Executive positions. There are no guarantees of a job offer but an average of one out of every two program participants is hired or extended.

Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program

The Tim Russert Fellowship

  • One-year, paid position in the NBC News Washington, D.C. bureau.
  • The fellow will work on a rotational basis in key areas of the bureau including assignments on "Meet the Press" and with the NBC News Political Unit.
  • Responsibilities will include assisting talent and producers, participating in new shoots, and story research.
  • The goal is to give one motivated journalist the opportunity to be mentored by seasoned NBC News staff members and truly experience a yearlong "boot camp" in political journalism.
