How to Write an Effective LinkedIn Profile

A LinkedIn profile is a great way to advertise your greatest commodity: you! Your LinkedIn profile shows up first in Google searches on your name, helps you stay connected in your industry, and makes it easy for recruiters to find you.

Use the tips below to make the most of your profile, along with our LinkedIn Profile Rubric to help guage your profile's effectiveness.


Create an account

Open a free account with LinkedIn. Your name is your brand, so use your middle name or middle initial to help you stand out if you have a common name. Upload a friendly, professional-looking picture. Employers gravitate toward profiles that show an approachable potential hire.

Upload your resume

After your resume has been critiqued at the Career Center and is presentable, upload it to your LinkedIn account. Be sure to fix any formatting issues that occur. For example, you may need to copy and paste bullet points.

Write a headline

A good headline grabs readers’ attention and draws them in. Use the headline feature in LinkedIn to entice people to read your full profile. List your area of study and communicate your career ambitions. Using a tagline or letting others know that you are open to opportunities can be helpful.

Link to your Twitter account / use status updates

If you are tweeting in a professional manner, link your Twitter account to your LinkedIn account. It allows you to post from LinkedIn to both accounts at the same time—and it demonstrates that you are active in social media.

If you are not tweeting, use the LinkedIn status updates to keep your connections aware of the work you are doing in classes or internships. Post articles that you find of interest. Let others know if you are job seeking, and what/where you are looking!

Edit the URL

LinkedIn automatically gives you a URL composed of random letters and numbers. Change this URL to reflect the full name used on your profile so that people can easily find your account in web searches, and so that you can use it on your resume or in email signatures.  

Write a summary

Express your personal brand by describing your accomplishments as well as your ambitions. Highlight your strengths and experiences using keywords that are relevant to your industry.

List skills & areas of expertise

Skills should include keywords and synonyms that reflect your skills and are relevant to your industry. Phrases, acronyms, abbreviations, and certifications can all be used. Consider all of the many keywords that an employer may search for someone with your skills and experience.

Use applications

LinkedIn provides many other options to bolster your profile, such as organizations, volunteer experience and causes, projects, certifications, languages, publications, honors and awards, test scores, courses, and patents. Use as many of these as are relevant; they provide recruiters with a lot more “hire-able” information than a standard resume.

Describe your education history

List study abroad experiences, club activities, and extracurriculars here.

List interests

Interests can become talking points when networking and provide others with further insight into your personality and selling points.

Join Groups

LinkedIn Groups provide fantastic forums for learning more about an industry or field, and for meeting and connecting with others.  Why not start by following the Career Center's Group?
