Application Submission Dates
- Faculty in A&S, CSOM, LSOE, CSON, GSSW, LAW, and STM—submit completed application online by Friday, October 30, 2015.
- Chairs, division directors—submit evaluations to dean by Friday, November 13, 2015.
- Deans—submit applications and evaluations to the Vice Provost for Research by Friday, November 20, 2015.
At least 16 Research Incentive Grants, each worth up to a total of $15,000, including one month's summer salary, are available annually on a competitive basis, with approximately nine intended primarily for untenured junior faculty to assist them in establishing their research program. At least one RIG has been designated to support research consistent with the University's commitment to the service of faith and the promotion of justice. The research project must be initiated during the summer months but the project period may continue through the following academic year. The RIG program is designed to support research carried out directly by the faculty applicant. With rare exceptions, a RIG will not be awarded to the same faculty member more than once in three years.
All regular full-time tenure-track faculty are eligible for these grants.
Amount of Award and Condition
Each RIG recipient will be awarded up to a total of $15,000, including one month's summer salary. Projects should be designed to start during the summer recess and to be completed by the end of the following academic year. A brief report on the outcome of the research effort should be prepared and submitted to the Vice Provost for Research, with a copy sent to the Internal Grants Manager, Shaylonda Barton.
An individual can apply for and receive a summer/fall Research Expense Grant, a winter/spring Research Expense Grant, and a Research Incentive Grant in the same year. REGs are awarded biannually and are available competitively to defer the smaller expenses of doing research. If an individual does apply for one or more REGs and a RIG, the application should include an attachment indicating the degree of interdependence among the proposals. RIGs may be used for income; however, any amount that is used as income will be subject to taxation.
Application Review Process
A Faculty Grants committee, whose members will be determined in consultation with the University Research Council, will screen all applications and recommendations and will make the awards. The Committee will be chaired by the Vice Provost for Research, and Chairperson of the University Research Council.
Submission of Applications
In putting together your submission to the Faculty Grants committee, please take careful note of all of the following:
Your submission will be reviewed by volunteer faculty. To fully respect their limited time commitment, the description of the proposal must follow the outline provided below and must not exceed two pages; the budget summary must not exceed one page; and your summary CV or list of publications and extramural support must not exceed two pages. Submissions that exceed these guidelines will not be considered.
The ranking by your dean and departmental chair must be completed for your proposal to be considered by the Committee.
In following these guidelines please make every effort to submit a quality application. More and more faculty are applying for these grants and the level of competition continues to increase. You can increase your chances for a favorable review by ensuring that the proposed research and its scholarly significance and objectives are clear to any intelligent reader; the relationship of your proposed work to your own program of research and to developments in your field is stated in a concise and compelling manner; and the work you propose and the methods you will employ are transparent and appropriate.
Please know that we encourage all eligible faculty to apply for RIG grant consideration.
Application Instructions and Supporting Documents
Please be sure that your submittal packet includes all of the following:
- Completed cover sheet (one page);
- Description of proposed study (two pages);
- Proposed budget (one page);
- List of recent publications and extramural support or summary CV (two pages).
Description of Proposed Study
Please describe the proposed study in non-technical terms on the RIG application form as follows:
- Proposed research and its scholarly significance;
- Research objectives for the period of proposed work;
- Relationship of research objectives to the longer term goals of the applicant's research;
- Relationship of the proposed work to current state of knowledge in the field;
- Relationship to related work by applicant and others in the field;
- General plan of work, including specific explanation of the methodology and the means of collecting data;
- Relationship of proposed work to a larger project, if any;
- Potential for extramural support and possible sources;
- Relevance of the project for your own scholarly and professional development or advancement.
As noted above, please provide a one-page budget summary for the project.
Publications and Extramural Support or Summary CV
Submit a short list (not more than two pages) of your publications, including those in press, and of your extramural support for the past five years. One purpose of the grant support is to foster extramural support, another is to assist faculty in establishing new lines of research. These are very important purposes and the likelihood of success in either area will be taken into account in determining recipients of these grants.
Recommendations Required by Dean and Chairpersons
It is the faculty applicant's responsibility to complete the applicant's information on the Evaluation form. Send the completed form, along with a copy of the guidelines and application, to the proper individual in accordance with the above submission dates.
Criteria of Selection
The Faculty Grants committee will judge applications by criteria generally used in the review of sponsored research proposals, with the merit of the proposal as judged by the reviewers being the primary criterion. In addition, priority will be given to proposals that will:
- Assist younger faculty members to launch their research careers;
- Assist more senior faculty members to redirect their research careers or make significant progress on an important project;
- Likely produce significant results;
- Likely result in publication;
- Assist in bringing an existing project of importance to a successful conclusion;
- Relate to preliminary investigations that have potential for later obtaining outside support.
Timing of Award
The review process will occur in late January and RIG recipients will be notified of decisions by Friday February 20, 2015.
