Background
In Fall 2002, a group of student leaders and arts festival staff were brainstorming ways to commemorate the fifth arts festival and create some excitement in advance of the festival. Senior Fran Grabowski reminded everyone of the Cows on Parade - a city-wide public art project that drew international acclaim and brought millions of tourists to Chicago, enlisting fresh ideas from a variety of artists and building community throughout Chicago. Many other cities have followed suit, including Maine's "bears" and Boston's "cod." Well, reminiscent of the Cows on Parade, the Arts Council had its own unique sculptures surface around campus. The FIVES project inspired collaboration in various corners of the Boston College community and built a lot of excitement in anticipation of the festival.

Concept
In further developing the concept, we were inspired by the painting by Charles Demuth entitled The Figure Five in Gold. (This painting was drawn with chalk at the arts festival and was the subject of a coloring contest for kids.) Mark Cooper, Fine Arts professor and professional artist, built the basic sculptures - a huge five in four varations - from wood and a blank white canvas. Student groups designed, added to, painted, wrote, glued, and otherwise made the fives their own. The Arts Council used them in advance of the festival as a marketing campaign - with FIVES appearing in the weeks before the festival all over campus. We moved them to O'Neill Plaza during the festival for an art exhibit.
