The primary objective of the Jaime Escalante Tutorial Program is to assist students to successfully complete their course work. It attempts to transform good students into even better students. In many cases, tutors have had previous involvement with the office, and are continuing the Office of AHANA Student Programs' tradition of service by assisting others. Studies have shown that those students who have used tutorial services have outperformed nonusers.

OASP English-as-a-Foreign Language (EFL) Support Program for Graduate Students
The Office of AHANA Student Programs is offering an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Support Program for Graduate Students. Graduate students are encouraged to take advantage of all three services.
- Reading/Conversation Seminar has two purposes: first, to aid reading comprehension; second, to address all aspects of the students' spoken English, from pronunciation to colloquial usage. Readings will be selected from the works of skilled writers addressing issues of contemporary relevance including, but not limited to, items from newspapers such as The New York Times. No advance preparation is required. Reading materials will be provided, and the class will read over them together during the meeting. Discussion will follow the reading, ideally on the topic addressed, although the conversation may naturally (and quite acceptably) follow another course. The instructor will make efforts to include all students in both reading and conversation. Students are likewise encouraged to help ensure that no one is left out. Students do not need to make appointment to use this service.
- EFL tutor can help students with everything from organizing the written work to teaching grammar. Students do not need to make an appointment to see the tutor.
- EFL Writing Seminar *- This five-week seminar is designed to help graduate students at Boston College who are learning English as a foreign language to strengthen their skills in writing for an American academic context. Given the brief duration of the seminar, we will focus on broad topics in order to provide students with an increased awareness of their aptitudes and areas for improvement. Students should not expect this seminar to instill a rigid sense of rule-bound correctness, whether grammatical or formal. Rather, the hope is that they will grow in confidence and fluency as they approach the task of writing in English.
- Spaces are limited to 10 students for the Writing Seminar. In order to participate, the student must:
- be a non-native English speaker;
- be interested in improving his/her English writing skills;
- be enrolled in a Boston College graduate program (full-time or part-time);
- be committed to attending all five classes between
- submit completed
application by 4:00PM, October 3, 2008 to OASP at 72 College Road or email at oasp@bc.edu. Acceptance notification will be sent out by October 6, 2008.
*Attendance
While we cannot enforce a policy of mandatory attendance, we emphasize the importance of attending each session. Regular attendance by all students fosters an environment of learning among a community of friends. In such a community, each of us can be comfortable enough with those around us to make — and learn from — the mistakes that are a necessary part of learning another language. Furthermore, the student who already feels confident of his or her skills in a certain area can not only benefit from revisiting the basics, but, more importantly, can also help less-advanced fellow students grow in understanding and ability. For these and other reasons, we encourage you to come every week. But if, in the event of an emergency, you are unable to attend class, please inform the instructor by e-mail as soon as possible.
