SANKOFA Leadership Program
Thea Bowman AHANA and Intercultural Center
To provide male students opportunities to develop and utilize leadership skills that help them engage and contribute in the college and surrounding communities.
A year-long leadership program which integrates concepts of leadership, identity development, cultural awareness and athletics.
The concept of "Sankofa" is derived from King Adinkera of the Akan people of West Africa. "Sankofa" teaches us that we must go back to our roots in order to move forward. That is, we should reach back and gather the best of what our past has to teach us, so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward.
By using the collective knowledge of the presenters and the participants, we can learn from each other, and in turn, provide learning opportunities for others. By integrating athletics as part of the program, it becomes a natural and literal exercise in team building and group dynamics.
Eligibility and Dates of the Program:
To participate in the Sankofa Leadership Program, you MUST be available Tuesday evenings after 5pm, and some Sundays from 12-2pm, September through April.
