GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The purpose of the Office of AHANA Student Programs Community Research Program (CRP) is to provide leadership, research, and public policy training for undergraduate juniors and seniors interested in and committed to the Latino and Asian community.
Through this program, students attend a research methods seminar; participate with academics and activists in discussions concerning the state of the Latino and Asian community in Massachusetts as well as in the nation; write a research paper on an aspect of the Latino and Asian condition; participate in a summer leadership institute where they meet policy makers, government officials, and community leaders to analyze pressing issues of concern to Latinos and Asians in the U.S and in Massachusetts; and conduct a service project at a Latino and Asian community based organization.
PROGRAM COMPONENTS
Students are required to complete all aspects of the program to receive a Certificate of Completion, which include:
- Community Service Research Seminar
This year-long Independent Study Seminar will take place in two stages. The first semester students will study quantitative and qualitative research techniques and develop a proposal for a research project on issues affecting the Latino and Asian community in Massachusetts. Students will 1) select a topic, 2) conduct a literature review and 3) identify the purpose and research method for the project. The seminar will also include a Lecture Series where researchers will talk about their current work on issues related to the Latino and Asian community.
The second semester, under the guidance of a research supervisor, students will conduct their research project on an issue affecting the Latino and Asian community. Students will receive three credits for the Seminar and the grade will be an average of the grades obtained in each part of the Seminar.
- Service
Students will volunteer to implement a service project at a local community organization that serves the Latino and Asian community. Students cap opt to volunteer for 10 hours a week for one semester or 5 hours a week for the entire academic year. Options may depend on volunteer site.
- Summer Leadership Institute
Students will have the opportunity to attend a conference and present their research in the summer following the program.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
The program welcomes applications from students that meet the following criteria:
- Current undergraduate juniors and seniors
- 3.0 grade point average
- Interested in leadership development and community involvement
