For sixteen years, United Students Against Sweatshops has trained students to run direct action based campaigns that leverage our unique power as students to win victories for workers and students on campus and around the world. Students from Northeastern, Emerson, Tufts, Boston College, Boston University, and Harvard have teamed up to host a one-day student organizer training! During this boot camp, we will:


  • Practice concrete organizing skills, including one-on-one conversations to move our peers from apathy to action.

  • Share ideas on how to build campaigns to win concrete victories and how to escalate with creative, effective actions.

  • Build a stronger, broader, more coordinated movement, developing plans that will lead to victory.

  • Learn how to get your message out loud and clear through mainstream and alternative media.

  • Strategize high-intensity direct action tactics with activists who have coordinated major actions on our campuses or in our communities.

  • Learn how students mobilized hundreds of their peers to take direct action.

On October 29 - 30, the Volunteer and Service Learning Center and Intersections will welcome to campus José Salvador Gomez, a leader in the Christian Base Communities of El Salvador. José is Development and Projects Coordinator at Fundahmer (Fundación Hermano Mercedes Ruíz), a Salvadoran nonprofit social organization developed as an instrument at the service of the Christian Base Communities of El Salvador (CEBES).

Most importantly, Fundahmer, and José personally, has been involved with our Boston College students since 1998, when the first delegation of students traveled to El Salvador on a Campus Ministry program. Over the past 15 years this organization has facilitated a sustainable relationship of solidarity with the small community of El Ocotillo in the department of Morazan. One result of this relationship has been a scholarship program that has allowed dozens of rural Salvadoran students to complete high school and even continue on to get a university degree, something unimaginable without the relationship our students have been able to create with the administrative support of Fundahmer. 


We are inviting you to join us for a faculty/administrator luncheon on Thursday, October 30 at noon in Stokes S201. José and Laurel Marshall, a graduate of SLU and two year volunteer at Fundahmer, will share about the work they do in community development, self-sustainability, and solidarity projects with sister communities. José will also share about current realities that are contributing to the migration of so many youth north to the US border, the legacy of Oscar Romero, and the role of small faith communities today. Hopefully there will be some good time for questions and conversation.

The application is currently closed. Initial Applications are accepted Aug - Oct 31 of the senior year in high school.

Program Overview

1. Seniors in high schools throughout the United States who meet the eligibility requirements may apply each year for one of 250 four-year, achievement-based scholarships.

2. Approximately 2,200 applicants will be selected as Semifinalists and notified by mail and email around December 1. Semifinalists must then complete a secondary application, including essays, official transcripts, and two letters of recommendation. Semifinalist applications are due by mid-January. Our Program Review Committee will select 250 Finalists to advance to the final interview phase. Notifications are sent mid-February.

3. In April, the 250 Finalists are invited to Atlanta for personal interviews. The Finalists are interviewed by a National Selection Committee representing outstanding leaders in business, government, education and the arts. 50 students are then designated as National Scholars and receive awards of $20,000 for college; 200 students are designated as Regional Scholars and receive awards of $10,000 for college.

Eligibilty Requirements

CURRENT high school (or home-schooled) seniors attending school in the United States (or select DoD schools); U.S. Citizens; U.S. Nationals; U.S. Permanent Residents; Temporary Residents (in a legalization program); Refugees; Asylees; Cuban-Haitian Entrants; or Humanitarian Parolees; anticipating completion of high school diploma at the time of application; planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution; carrying a minimum 3.00 GPA at the end of their junior year of high school.

Applicants May Not:

 Holocaust Remembrance Projects Essay Contest

1. DEADLINE INFO: Essays will be accepted until Midnight of April 19, 2012, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Entries received after 12:00 a.m. (EST) will not be accepted.

2. ELIGIBILITY: This contest is open to all students age 19 and under who meet the following criteria: 1) are currently enrolled as a high school student in grades 9-12 (including home schooled students), or who are high school seniors who may graduate high school any time in 2011, or who are enrolled in a high school equivalency program; and (2) are residents of the United States, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, or are U.S. citizens living abroad.

3. WRITING PROMPT and WORD COUNT: Students responding to this year's writing contest should study the Holocaust and then, in an essay of no more than 1,200 words: (a) analyze why it is vital that the remembrance, history and lessons of the Holocaust be passed on to a new generation; and (b) suggest what young people can do to combat and prevent prejudice, discrimination and violence in our world today. Your essay may have a theme that addresses one or two aspects of the Holocaust, or may be a broad overview. It is important that your essay exhibit your research skills as well as your creativity.

4. SUBMISSION: All essays must be uploaded to this contest web site by clicking HERE. Essays sent by mail, faxed, or e-mailed will be disqualified. The body of your essay may be NO MORE THAN 1,200 WORDS. The essays must be written in English. Every student must also submit an entry form which you will be prompted to complete before you download your essay. Be sure to log into this website through Internet Explorer or Firefox in order to successfully submit your uploaded essay and entry form.

5. REFERENCES: While this is a creative writing contest, research must be an integral component of the writing process. Every essay must include a Works Cited, Reference Page, or Bibliography citing all materials used in the research and writing of the essay. When conducting your word count, do not include words contained on your Works Cited, Reference Page, or Bibliography.

6. YOUR NAME: We will identify your essay electronically through the entry form you complete when you enter the contest. Do not include your name anywhere on any page of your essay. When conducting your word count, do not include words contained on your Works Cited, Reference Page, or Bibliography.

7. AUTHORSHIP and FORMAT: Each essay submitted must be the work of one student and may not be the collective work of more than one student. The essay must be in prose format and may be a commentary or interpretation of primary and secondary source material such as historical and reference material; oral histories; interviews, eyewitness accounts; official documents, maps, diaries, correspondence, testimonies, autobiographies and works of poetry, video or audiotapes, films, art, CD-ROM and Internet sources. The essay must be primarily directed toward this year's writing prompt. The essay must not be a fictitious story, poem, or lyrics to a song.

8. JUDGING: Entries will be judged anonymously and will not be returned to students. Submissions that adhere to the guidelines will be judged with special attention to: (1) evidence of relevant reading and thoughtful use of resource materials; (2) treatment of the writing prompt; (3) clear and effective language, mechanics and grammar; and, (4) a coherent plan of organization, and (5) creative use of literary devices.

9. ORIGINAL WORKS: By submitting an essay, applicants certify that their essays are original, authored solely by them and that in writing their essay the writer did not plagiarize or otherwise infringe upon the rights of any third parties.

10. CERTIFICATES OF PARTICIPATION: Certificates of Participation will be issued by e-mail to all students who enter an essay to the Holocaust Remembrance Project and provide a working e-mail address in their entry form. Certificates will be printed out by recipients.

11. WINNERS: Winners will be notified of contest results by a telephone call, and all winning essays will be posted to our Web site by June 10, 2012. The ten First-Place Winners and teachers chosen to accompany the group will join Holocaust survivors during an all-expense-paid trip to Boston in late June of 2012.

12. SCHOLARSHIPS: The ten First-Place Winners will be awarded college scholarships from $5,000 to $2,500. Announcement of awards will take place at a special event during the Boston trip. Scholarships are directly paid to winners' post-secondary educational institutions after students have graduated from high school and upon Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation's receipt of copies of their registration paperwork from said post-secondary educational institutions.

13. CASH PRIZES: Ten Second-Place Winners are awarded $500 cash prizes. Ten Third-Place Winners are awarded $250 cash prizes. These prizes are presented in the form of checks that are mailed to the address provided in the Second and Third Place Winners' entry forms.

14. MISCELLANEOUS INSTRUCTIONS: All essays submitted may be used or published in whole or in part by the Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation or by other parties with its written permission. The Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation reserves the right not to publish any essay it deems inappropriate for any reason. First-Place Winners MUST agree to participate in the entire Holocaust Remembrance Scholarship experience in Boston in order to receive a scholarship. In the event that a First-Place Winner is unable or unwilling to participate in the scholar week in Boston, in its entirety, no substitution prize will be awarded. The Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation reserves the right not to award a prize or any prizes when submissions do not meet contest standards or criteria. Former Holocaust Remembrance Project First-Place Winners are not eligible to enter in this essay contest. National Association for Black Journalist

NABJ awards more than $60,000 in scholarships annually to deserving students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. Scholarships are worth up to $2,500. Scholarships are open to any foreign or American born student, currently attending or entering an accredited four-year college/university in the U.S. or those who are candidates for graduate school.

General Requirements

  • All applicants must be a student member of NABJ
  • All applicants must be a journalism major or pursuing a career in journalism.
  • All applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college or university and have at least one year of school remaining. Awards will be granted for the 2010-2011 school year.

United States Department of Agriculture Scholarships


Thurgood Marshall Fund

Research studies show a leading obstacle to obtaining a college degree is a student's inability to afford college. In 2011, the National Center for Education Statistics, reported that students enrolling or completing Bachelor’s programs has largely become stagnant.

Since its inception in 1987, Thurgood Marshall College Fund  (TMCF) has provided scholarships to qualified students attending its member-schools.  TMCF scholarships have provided support to help fund an education at one of our nation's public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

TMCF provides merit-based scholarships to students seeking financial assistance to complete their education. TMCF scholarship recipients are awarded annually to students meeting the TMCF eligibility criteria. Awards are made each semester and are based on a verification process designed to ensure that academic expectations are being met and that there is an unmet financial need.

All classifications of students are invited to apply for a TMCF scholarship.

TMCF Scholarships:

Are merit based and applicants must have a financial need to qualify.

Are restricted for payment of tuition, on campus room and board, books and fees.

Are paid directly to the college or university on behalf of the award recipient to be credited to his or her school account.

The average award is $2,200.00 per student per semester.

All scholarship award recipients must re-apply annually for renewal.

TMCF Scholarship Criteria:

Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

Must apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid

Attend one of the 47 TMCF Member Schools

Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident with a valid permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551

Demonstrate leadership qualities and service experience

Be recommended by a Faculty or Staff member of your current school


Microsoft Scholarships

A Microsoft scholarship provides a leg up so you can pursue undergraduate studies in computer science and related technical disciplines. You’ll join a community of scholarship recipients from the United States, Canada and Mexico who share your passion for technology and academic excellence. It all adds up to achieving your primary goal—making a real difference in the software industry.

Microsoft is offering four different types of technical scholarships for the 2012-2013 academic year to current undergraduate students: General Scholarships, Women’s Scholarships, Minority Scholarships, and Scholarships for Students with Disabilities.

We encourage student populations currently underrepresented in the field of computer science to pursue technical degrees. All candidates who meet the criteria for eligibility described below may certainly apply, while we do award a large majority of our student scholarships to women, minorities, and the disabled. Minority applicants must belong to one of the following groups underrepresented in the software field: African-American, Hispanic, or Native American.


As a recipient of one of our scholarships, you’ll enjoy the benefits for one academic year. You may receive either a full or partial scholarship for the academic year. Full tuition scholarships will cover tuition for the academic year as posted by the financial aid office at your college or university. Microsoft will make payments to the designated school, and they’re not transferable to other academic institutions. You may use the funds for tuition only—not for other costs listed on your bursar bill, such as room and board.

You’ll also need to apply for a summer internship and if offered an internship, you must complete the salaried summer internship of 12 weeks or more at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington. (Microsoft reserves the right not to offer an internship position to the scholarship winner if an appropriate match cannot be found.)


To be eligible, you must be enrolled full time in a Bachelor’s degree program at a 4-year college or university in the United States, Canada, or Mexico at the time you submit the application. Plus, we’ll need to see that you’re making satisfactory progress toward an undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline such as electrical engineering, math, or physics—and that you demonstrate an interest in computer science. Because the scholarship is merit based, you must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 4.0, or a 4.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 5.0. Burger King Scholars

James W. McLamore WHOPPER™ Scholarship

Recipients will be chosen from the BURGER KING® Scholars pool including both BURGER KING® General Track and BURGER KING® Employee-Based Track applicants based upon the following criteria. Recipients must be:

Citizens of the United States or Canada

Students who have graduated from high school within the last three years or full-time students who are seniors at a public, private, parochial or alternative high school or home school in the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico

Students who are applying as a full time freshman to a four-year accredited, college or university that is located in the United States and is exempt from taxation under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code

Students who have a cumulative un-weighted grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.3

Students who have taken and received a minimum ACT Composite score of 25 or a minimum combined SAT score of 1700

Students who demonstrate an active leadership role in community service, athletics, and/or similar co-curricular activity (such as student government, team sports, fraternal life, etc); and Students who demonstrate substantial work experience


The only mode of application will be a web-based e-application. All applicants will be required to complete the application in English or Spanish. The following awards are available:

LULAC National Scholarship Fund (LNSF):   

Run completely at the local, grassroots level, the LNSF is coordinated nationally by LNESC.  We bring together local fund raising efforts with corporate partners to provide over $750,000.00 in scholarships to all levels of degree-seeking students each year.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for a scholarship:

•  Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident

• Must have applied to or be enrolled in a   college, university, or graduate school, including 2-year colleges, or vocational schools that lead to an associate’s degree

•  A student will not be eligible for a scholarship if he/she is related to a scholarship committee member, the Council President, or an individual contributor to the local funds of the Council

AWARD CRITERIA: Applicants are eligible for the following three types of scholarship awards:

1.National Scholastic Achievement Awards

• The student has a GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, and, if the student is an entering freshman

• The student scores 29 or higher on the ACT test, or 1350 or higher on the SAT test.

2. Honors Awards

• The student has a GPA of 3.25 or better on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, and, if the student is an entering freshman

• The student scores 23 or higher on the ACT test, or 1100 or higher on the SAT test.

3. General Awards

Grades and academic performance will serve as indicators of potential; however, emphasis may be placed on the individual’s motivation, sincerity, and integrity, which can best be revealed through a personal interview and in the personal essay. Need, community involvement, and leadership activities will also be considered.


For consideration of an Honors or NSA award, entering college freshman must also submit:

• Unofficial high school or college transcript with GPA                             

• Copy of ACT or SAT score report (official College Board copy not required).


GE Foundation/LULAC Scholarship Program

The General Electric Foundation/League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Scholarship Program is intended to assist and encourage outstanding minority students in completing their college education. The program is directed specifically to disadvantaged minority students with career interests in business or engineering. The GE/LULAC Scholarship Program is sponsored by the General Electric Foundation and is administered by the LULAC National Educational Service Centers (LNESC), the educational branch of LULAC. All awards are contingent upon the support of the General Electric Foundation.


TERMS: The GE/LULAC Scholarship Program will award $5,000 scholarships to qualified minority students who are enrolled as business or engineering majors leading to a bachelor’s degree at accredited colleges or universities in the United States who will be classified as college sophomores in the fall. The $5,000 awards will be divided into two equal disbursements made on September 15 and January 31. Scholarship awards are sent directly to the recipient’s college or university and deposited in the recipient’s name. The funds will be allocated toward the payment of tuition and academic fees, and the purchase of required educational materials and books. The school is custodian of the funds and will disburse the award consistent with the purpose of this program.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for a scholarship:

• Must be a minority student pursuing full-time studies leading to a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university in the U.S.

• Must be CLASSIFIED AS A COLLEGE SOPHOMORE in the fall semester.

• Must have a cumulative college grade point average of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent. • Must be a business or engineering major.

• Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.


Roothbert Fund

The Roothbert Fund was created in 1958 by Albert and Toni Roothbert to help men and women in need of financial aid to further their education. The principal focus of The Fund is its Scholarships Program, through which it makes grants for undergraduate or graduate study at accredited colleges or universities. Scholarships may only be applied to study at an accredited institution based in the United States. The Fund seeks candidates who are "motivated by spiritual values," and works to foster fellowship among them.

The Fund is a small, nearly all-volunteer scholarship fund based in New York City, which awards yearly grants and works to foster fellowship among grant recipients. Once a year, the Fund accepts applications for grants, which include essays, transcripts and recommendations. From these written applications, the Fund identifies a group of finalists to be invited for a brief personal interview. On the basis of this interview, the Fund typically selects about 20 new scholarship recipients each year.

Eligibility: Roothbert Fund scholarships are open to all in the United States regardless of sex, age, color, nationality or religious background. While the Fund does not emphasize any particular form of religious practice or worship, it seeks to provide support to persons motivated by spiritual values. The Fund has awarded grants to persons entering a wide range of careers. However, preference will be given to those who can satisfy high scholastic requirements and are considering careers in education. For more information, applicants should read with care the Founders Prologue in the History and Mission of the Fund.

Location of Applicants: As a rule, The Roothbert Fund does not make Scholarship Grants EXCEPT to applicants whose current or permanent address is located in one of the following States of the United States and applicants planning to move to one of such States prior to March 1 of the year in which the application is made: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia, or North Carolina. It is probably counter-productive to submit an application if you live outside this area.

Size of grants: Grants are small (averaging $2,000-$3,000) and are meant to be supplementary. Aid is given for the ensuing school year.

VERY IMPORTANT--BEFORE YOU CONSIDER APPLYING: Please note that applicant interviews are scheduled on extremely short notice in March and are held in New York, New Haven, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. The Fund will not pay any transportation charges or other costs of applicants who are invited to be interviewed. Persons who live at a significant distance from these cities should reconsider submitting an application, if the expense and time required to travel to any of those cities would be unduly burdensome. No grant is awarded by the Fund without a personal interview. However, submitting an application does not guarantee being invited for an interview, and being invited for an interview does not guarantee a scholarship.

In making a decision to apply, applicants should also keep in mind that if they are awarded a grant, they will be obligated to attend at least one weekend fellowship conference sponsored by the Fund during the first year on grant.

Obtaining an application: Because of its staff limitations, the Fund designates a three-month period from November 1 to January 31 each year in which printed applications forms are made available. Because forms are revised each year, applicants are discouraged from copying forms that may be on file with financial aid offices, or have been saved from prior years.

Requests by individuals for application forms should be directed to the Fund after November 1 for the ensuing academic year. The form includes requests for autobiographical essays, supporting transcripts and letters of recommendation.                                                          

To obtain a copy of the current application form, submit a written request with a stamped, self-addressed envelope to The Roothbert Fund, Inc., 475 Riverside Drive, Room 1830, New York, NY 10115, or you may download a current copy of the form here between November 1 and January 31.

Interviews: After the application forms are received, some candidates will be invited to an interview with the Scholarships Committee. The Fund does not make grants to applicants who are not invited to be interviewed. Interviews are held during March of each year at Fund headquarters in New York City and currently also in Washington, DC, New Haven, and Philadelphia. Before entering the competition, each applicant should consider carefully whether he or she can arrange to be present for such an interview and must affirm on the application form his or her intention to be present for an interview, if invited. The Fund does NOT reimburse applicants' travel or other expenses incurred in the interview process.

Announcement date: Awards are announced in late April. Grants are mailed to the grantees' institutions in August.

Terms of acceptance: Acceptance of an award obligates the recipient to:

• maintain a high standard of work and conduct,

• have transcripts sent to the Fund by his or her school after each semester,

• attend at least one weekend fellowship meeting,

• keep a close relationship with the Fund through correspondence and visits, and

• advise the Fund promptly of any change in his or her academic or financial situation.

Every award is subject to revocation if, in the opinion of the Fund, the holder fails to live up to these requirements.


Sidley PreLaw Scholars Initiative

Students can receive financial support to cover tuition in LSAT prep course and application fees for law schools. Also offers coaching on completing a successful law school application, additional $2500 in scholarship assistance for the senior year of college, a seminar instruction on the structure of the American legal system and other useful topics. Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Provides Latino community more college scholarships and educational outreach support than any other organization in the country. Several types of scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students are available. (Application deadline varies with scholarship)

Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies

Dedicated to ensuring the participation and success of Asian Pacific Americans in government at the national, state, and local levels. Offers fellowships and summer internships that place college students in Congress, federal agencies, or the APICS office itself. (Application deadline TBA)

John Hancock Summer Diversity Internship Program

Offers on-the-job training, programming, and mentorship within the company in this 12-week summer internship program. (Application deadline TBA) 

College Summer Enrichment Program (SEP)

Offers a tuition-free 4-week residential program for undergraduate sophomore and juniors interested in entering the medical field.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine Minority Student Summer Research Opportunity Program

A program designed for undergraduate students who have been underrepresented in the field of medicine who have a strong interest in a research career in biomedical or biological sciences. (Application deadline March 1st, 2008)

The National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) Scholarship Program

A program that aims to foster Hispanic leadership through graduate management education and professional development. This scholarship assists qualified Hispanics to pursue MBAs. (Application deadline TBA)

The Daniel Kovach Scholarship Foundation

Offers a list of multiple scholarships. Scholarships are awarded for variety of areas, from blogging to web design.

Match Corps

The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) is Accepting Applications for its Tuck Business Bridge Program 


Washington D.C. - The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) is committed to advancing the Hispanic Community's Diversity of Thought, and we recognize the importance of a strong educational foundation in order to do so. That is why CHLI has partnered with Dartmouth College, to offer students the opportunity to participate in the Tuck Business Bridge Program.  


The Tuck Business Bridge Program is a four-week, total-immersion program for rising juniors, seniors, and recent graduates. Taking place at the Tuck School of Business on the campus of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire; the Tuck Business Bridge Program offers students a rigorous curriculum that challenges them to work effectively within a team, develop leadership skills and familiarize themselves with today's business practices.


Students can expect to gain valuable knowledge in accounting, marketing, finance, and global economics. They will receive personalized attention by professors who are leaders in their respective fields, maximizing their learning experience and allowing face-to-face interaction. 


The Tuck Business Bridge Program takes place during the summer from July 15 to August 9, 2013.The application deadline for the Program is March 15, 2013.


CHLI will provide two students with a scholarship to participate in the program. Scholarship includes round-trip airfare, $4,900 to aid with room and board, and provides funds for research materials. In addition, students selected to participate will spend a weekend in Washington D.C. meeting CHLI staff, and sponsors of the program.


Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents of Hispanic descent, and either be enrolled in a four-year university, or be a recent college graduate focused in an area of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

What is FFP?

The Freshman Formation Program (FFP) is a year-long leadership program under the Asian Caucus geared for a select group of freshmen. Through discussion, reflection, mentorship and various opportunities, FFP fosters student formation to empower freshmen to become leaders within their communities and beyond. All participants of FFP will go through a series of leadership workshops, event planning, shadowing, and bonding. They will also be paired with an upperclassman mentor. What is AC?
Asian Caucus (AC) is the umbrella organization for the eight Asian culture clubs (Chinese Students Association, Japan Club of Boston College, Korean Students Association, Philippine Society of Boston College, South Asian Students Association, South East Asian Students Association, Taiwanese Cultural Organization, & Vietnamese Students Association). AC serves as the primary advocacy organization of the Asian and Asian-American community of +950 students at Boston College.


The 2015 Richard Tapia Conference is scheduled for February 18-21, 2015 in Boston, MA. The goal of the Tapia Conferences is to bring together undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, researchers, and professionals in computing from all backgrounds and ethnicities to:

•Celebrate the diversity that exists in computing;

•Connect with others with common backgrounds, ethnicities, disabilities, and gender so as to create communities that extend beyond the conference;

•Obtain advice from and make contacts with computing leaders in academia and industry;

•Be inspired by great presentations and conversations with leaders with common backgrounds.

This year’s conference theme is Diversity at Scale as the Tapia Conference celebrates efforts to move diversity in all aspects of computing beyond conversation and study into full practice and implementation. As a community, we recognize that we must scale our diversity efforts to fully utilize computing to address the larger problems faced by today’s society.

The conference provides scholarships for students (undergraduate/graduate), post-docs, and a limited number for faculty. Scholarships include conference registration, meals during the conference, hotel accommodations, and a reimbursable travel stipend. Tapia scholarships are generously funded by government and industry organizations. The Scholarship Committee realizes that an applicant’s level of accomplishment in computer science will vary for different students, particularly graduate and undergraduate students; however, a commitment to pursuing a career in computer science is an important part of the Tapia Conference experience. As examples, grades, level research experience, and recommendation letters may each play a different role in indicating an applicant’s interest in growing in the discipline.

2014-2015 Barclays Diversity Analyst Campus Programs

There are different programs for current freshmen, sophomores and juniors. All of them are based in New York and are 2-3 day commitments. For the sophomore and junior programs, all attendees will be interviewed for the 2015 summer internship program. For the junior program specifically, all attendees are also eligible to interview for the Inspiring Excellence Scholarship, which can award students up to $10,000. This one has the closest deadline—September 28.

Become a Peer Money Mentor

A Peer Money Mentor is a volunteer position offered by Successful Start for undergraduate and graduate students as well as staff who want to increase their knowledge of personal finances, while assisting a member of the BC community. Successful Start trains mentors in a variety of financial literacy topics, such as budgeting, credit management, credit reports, student loans and saving, and then are given the tools to help others apply these skills in their lives. After training, mentors commit to volunteering at least one hour each week to meet with their mentees in a one-on-one environment.

No previous experience necessary.
