Thea Bowman AHANA and Intercultural Center
Every year the Dr. Donald Brown Award Committee selects one outstanding senior who throughout his/her four years at Boston College has contributed to the AHANA Community in areas of student leadership and engagement.
Each Fall and Spring semester, the Karen Campbell Severin Book Award will be given to two undergraduate students who best exemplify Karen's legacy of giving unselfishly to the community. Applications will be reviewed by a committee overseen by the Thea Bowman AHANA and Intercultural Center.
Benjamin Elijah Mays Mentoring Program - A mentoring program that pairs individual undergraduate students with Boston College faculty or staff.
College Counseling - Individual advising and counseling sessions to address all aspects of student learning and development for interested students.
Nursing Outreach- This program creates a space for AHANA/Multicultural/OTE (AMO) CSON students to gather for peer support and interactions with BC-AMO nursing professional at least twice per semester.
Options through Education Transitional (OTE) Summer Program - A transitional program for a diverse group of First Year students who have demonstrated potential and leadership in spite of challenging educational and financial circumstances.
Study Abroad Summer Tuition Remission- To aid in the retention of students by providing the opportunity to study abroad.
Summer Tuition Remission- To aid in the retention of students by providing resources to afford those experiencing academic difficulty the opportunity to improve their status at Boston College.
Community Building Initiative- This is a new initiative to help build undergraduate student unity across areas of difference AND similarities.
Community Research Program - A year-long program that offers leadership, research, and public policy training for students interested in working with Latino, Asian American, Native American, or African and African Diaspora communities in Massachusetts. Through the program, students have the opportunity to conduct their own independent study under the supervision of a faculty member on issues related to any of the four research interest communities.
Spiritual Engagement and Outreach Initiatives-The SEOI aims to promote the spiritual and faith development of AHANA and multicultural students. We work to increase the awareness of spiritual diversity on campus by providing connections between multi-faith groups and students seeking to further their spiritual and faith formation.
Racial Identity Development Experience- Weekend experiences designed to help students explore and reflect on racial identity development in an intimate and safe environment.
SANKOFA Leadership Program - A year-long leadership program for male students which integrates concepts of leadership, identity development, cultural awareness, and athletics to help them engage in and contribute to the college and surrounding communities.
The Colorbrave Institute - A day-long workshop that aims to create an inclusive, brave space for members of the Boston College community to explore the impact of race and racial identity.
Dialogues on Race -A program for sophomores, juniors and seniors to engage in peer-led discussions on issues related to race. Session themes include: race at BC, their identity and how it shapes them, institutional racism, race in the media, and more.
Cultural Competency Training - Professional development workshops designed to increase knowledge and skills in cultural competency for Residential Life staff and Registered Student Organizations (RSOs).
Ethnic Heritage Months - BAIC collaborates with student organizations and academic and student affairs departments to celebrate the contributions of AHANA communities. Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 through October 15; Native American Heritage Month is in November; Black History Month is in February and Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated in April.
Racing to Justice - This one-credit seminar will explore the social construction of race through the lens of whiteness and pathways for engaging in racial justice advocacy. By building a cognitive understanding of racism and critically reflecting upon one’s life experiences in the context of privilege, this seminar will facilitate the development of a critical racial consciousness. Students will come prepared to discuss scheduled topics, but each session will provide opportunity for free-form discussion. In order to move from dialogue to action, each student will be asked to participate in an action of their choice and present their experiences engaging in racial justice advocacy.
