Using Quest Library Catalog

search for journals

Searching the Journals Title Catalog allows you to locate which journals BC has access to, both electronically and in print.

  • Use the drop down on the right hand side of the page (More BC Library Catalogs) to select Journal Titles Catalog from the list.
  • When searching for a journal, you are searching for the journal's title, not the article title.
  • Searching for a specific journal is just like searching for a book. You can search by Title, Author, Subject Heading, Call Number, etc.
  • Keep in mind that some journals have multiple titles.

For example: Searching for JAMA will generate similar results as searching for the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Please note: You will not be able to find journals in Quest using abbreviations from databases like Medline (e.g., J Clin Oncol for Journal of Clinical Oncology). You can look up journal abbreviations to find the full title in the book Periodical Title Abbreviations, which is at the Reference Desk in O'Neill Library (call number PN4832 .P47).

If you are looking for the full title of an abbreviation from PubMed, you can use PubMed's journal search to find the full title. There is additional information about finding full titles of journals on the website All That JAS: Journal Abbreviation Sources.

When a journal title is not available at Boston College
There are two options available if need a journal title that is not available at BC.

The first option is to request a copy of a journal article through interlibrary loan. All current BC students, faculty and staff are eligible to use the interlibrary loan service. The service is free, but it does require a valid BC username and password.

You may request an interlibrary loan when:

  • You do not find the title of a journal that you are looking for in Quest.
  • A journal volume is listed in Quest as missing.
  • A journal volume that you want is at the bindery.

Materials ordered through interlibrary loan arrive within 7-10 days when ordered from an institution in Massachusetts. Journals owned by institutions outside Massachusetts may take up to two weeks to arrive.

To fill out an online interlibrary loan request form:

Go to Your Account
You will be asked to provide your username and password
Select either Interlibrary Loan Book Request or Interlibrary Loan Journal Article Request from the list of options
Fill in the required information and click submit

The second option is to obtain the article from a library in the Boston Library Consortium, a group of seventeen cooperating academic and research institutions in the area. All BC students and faculty are eligible to use these libraries. See the BLC website for a listing of the participating institutions and their catalogs.

Visit the Reference Desk at O'Neill Library to obtain a BLC borrowing card. Once you have the card you can gain access to member libraries.
