LibX Firefox Toolbar

how to find, connect, use

LibX Library Toolbar is a Firefox plugin that gives your web browser quick access to Boston College Libraries' electronic resources. With LibX installed in your Firefox browser, all the power of the Boston College Libraries' catalog, FindIt full-text finder, Google Scholar, and more are just a click or two away.

Install the LibX Library Toolbar, Boston College Edition from the LibX hosted page. NOTE: The extension only works with the Mozilla Firefox browser, v1.5 or higher.

LibX adds three powerful features to your browser:

 1. LIBX LIBRARY TOOLBAR

The LibX extension adds a toolbar to your Firefox browser for faster access to Library resources.

Set up your toolbar:
Select the type of search (Keyword, Author, Title, etc.) from the dropdown menu on the left.

Then use the dropdown menu on the Search button to select which resource to search. The button can search the Quest catalog, locate E-Journal titles, or search for resources using Google Scholar.

Enter search terms into the toolbar and start the search. You can do this in three ways:

  • Type the search term(s) into the toolbar and click the Search button to begin the search;
  • Highlight any keyword, author, title, call number, subject, or ISBN/ISSN on the page. Right click and select "Add Selection to Search As...", and let LibX paste your highlighted terms into the search box. Then click the Search button to start the search;
  • Or, simply drag the highlighted text onto the Search button to start the search automatically
Combine several terms in a single search. Add more search boxes by clicking the down-arrow button

 2. CUSTOMIZED RIGHT-CLICK MENU

Highlight any term on the browser page and right click to call up the context menu. The menu items will change depending on the type of text that is highlighted.
  • Select one of the search options to instantly search the Quest catalog by keyword, author, title, or do a Google Scholar search.
  • "Add Selection to Search as..." copies your highlighted term into the toolbar, where you can do your own search.
  • Reload the page through BC's proxy server to get off-campus access to BC-only resources.

 3. EMBEDDED LINKS IN POPULAR WEBSITES

LibX places the cue in many web pages, such as
  • Amazon
  • Barnes & Noble
  • Google
  • Google Scholar
  • New York Times Book Reviews
  • Yahoo! Search, and others
As you browse these sites you will see the BC cue after many book or article titles. Click the cue to see if BC owns the book, or to get online access to the article.
