What is “Find It”?

“Find It” provides direct links from citations in certain databases to related services available for those citations. The types of services offered through “Find It” include:

    • Links to full text.
    • Check holdings in Quest Library Catalog.
    • Check holdings in WorldCat (Union Catalog).
    • Request an item via Interlibrary Loan.
    • Search for the author's name in Web of Science.
    • Need help finding it? Have comments? Contact us.

Please note:

  • The appearance of the “Find It” button may vary, depending on the database you are in. Some examples are:
  • Not all of the above services will always appear when you click the “Find It” button. It depends on the database that you are searching and the information that is available for the citation.
  • Databases that do not yet support linking technology will not display “Find It” button.

Why don't I see any “Find It” links?

  • The database may not work with “Find It”
  • The citation you found may not have enough information available to link with “Find It”
  • “Find It” link may be hard to find. “Find It” links may appear in different places depending on the database that you are using.

Why didn't I get a full text link for my article?

  • No electronic full text version available for that journal through BC
  • No electronic full text for this journal is available for this specific year through BC.

What should I do to obtain full text if it is not available electronically?

  • Check the BC Libraries holdings in Quest to see if the libraries own a copy in a different format.
  • If there are no holdings in Quest, you can order it via Interlibrary Loan Service.

What do I do when I get an error or some other "not found" message?

  • If the article is very recent, it's possible that it has not been loaded on publisher’s web site yet, so “Find It” cannot retrieve full text.
  • “Find It” links may be wrong and need to be updated. Choose “Contact Us” link from “Find It” menu or stop by the Reference Desk at one of the BC Libraries to let us know about any problems you may have.

Why am I prompted to login to full text even though “Find It” menu says that full text is available?

There may be a problem with access rights. Please let us know about this problem by choosing “Contact Us” link from “Find It” menu or stop by the Reference Desk at one of the BC Libraries.

Why when I click on "Link to full text", I only get to the journal's home page?

“Find It” will try to get you as close to the full text as it can. Often, because of the structure of the publisher's web site, “Find It” can not link directly to full text. Sometimes the best “Find It” can do is to take you to the table of contents or the journal's home page, and you'll have to navigate the publisher's site yourself to get to the full text. Essentially, a full text link in “Find It” means that full text is available, but you may have to do some work to get to it.

Why does the number of options in the “Find It” window vary?

When you click on the “Find It” icon, the system runs through the BC “Find It” database to see what services are available for that particular article or citation. Only those services which are available will display. We try to offer only those service options that are available for a given database.

Why are there multiple windows?

When you click on the “Find It” link, a menu window is generated listing all the services available for that item. When you select one of those services, a third window is generated, and it remains the window in which all activities generated from the “Find It” window take place. If you choose to go from viewing the full text to checking Quest from the menu, your second choice, to check Quest, will replace your view of the full text. You would have to chose full text again from the menu if you want to go back to the full text.

What does the RefWorks Direct Export Tool link do?

The RefWorks Direct Export Tool link will allow you to import the citation for the article for which the “Find It” button is appearing directly into RefWorks. If you are not already logged in to RefWorks, the RefWorks login screen will appear behind the “Find It” window. Simply login, and the selected citation will be added to your "Last Imported" folder.
