Conversations with... Nancy Werlin

Tuesday December 1, 2009 | 7:30 p.m.
Vanderslice Hall

Nancy Werlin writes literary psychological thrillers for young adults, among them The Rules of Survival, a 2006 National Book Award Finalist, and the Edgar-Award winning The Killer's Cousin. In an essay on fear in The Horn Book, she writes, "...I work out my fear using writing. And thus I know exactly how to map my fear onto my characters, so that you-the-reader can feel its reality. You will feel it not only because I am skilled at writing, but because my skill will force you, in turn, to map the characters' fears onto your own fears. To become one with them, and with me." Inspired by the ballad Scarborough Fair, her latest book, Impossible, combines suspense, fantasy and romance.
