Can a Parking Lot be Good for the Chesapeake Bay?
The answer could be yes, if it’s made of pervious concrete, a ‘green’ building material and the subject of a recent how-to workshop hosted by UMBC's Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education (CUERE).
Pervious concrete allows stormwater to slowly drain through it like a sponge. Traditional concrete causes runoff that erodes waterways and carries pollution into the Chesapeake Bay.

UMBC’s Political Correspondent at the Conventions
UMBC's nationally recognized politic analyst Tom Schaller had a front-row seat at the Democratic and Republican National Conventions as a correspondent for Salon.com.
Schaller, associate professor of political science, was in Colorado, covering the presumptive nomination of Sen. Barack Obama as the Democratic candidate for president. Schaller spent the following week at the Republican National Convention covering the presumptive nomination of Sen. John McCain.

Alumni Mentor UMBC Interns in the Workplace
When UMBC students stepped out of the classroom this summer to begin their internships, many had the University’s alumni looking out for them. For mechanical engineering major Yehuda Baumer, that someone was Zozscha Bomhardt ’94, who served as a mentor in her role as an engineering quality leader at GE Healthcare.
