Touring the MyFiles@bc Web application
Summary:  Learn about the interface of the MyFiles@bc Web application.

MyFiles@bc main page

The MyFiles@bc Web application is organized to help you easily navigate throughout your MyFiles@bc account. Once you sign in to your account (New Window www.bc.edu/myfiles), you see your home directory's contents. Here is an example of what MyFiles@bc looks like the first time you log in (see Figure 1):

Once you are signed in to your account, you can upload files to your MyFiles@bc account. (Learn how to upload files to your MyFiles@bc account.) Once files are uploaded to your MyFiles@bc account, you can work directly with the files listed or navigate to other folders using the left navigation or the navigation toolbar. Here is an example of what MyFiles@bc looks like after you have uploaded files to your account (see Figure 2):

Left navigation

The left navigation allows you to bookmark folders, search for files, and sign out of MyFiles@bc. It also allows you to manage your contacts and options (activity tracker & general preferences), empty your trash, and access the online documentation.

Here is an example of the left navigation (see Figure 3):

The following table lists and describes the left navigation options:

Left Navigation Options  
Click home to go to the top level of your MyFiles@bc account.
  • Click home to go to the top level of your MyFiles@bc account.
Click my bookmarks, then click add bookmark to add a new bookmark of a folder/directory.

My Bookmarks:

Click my searches, then click search for files to search for files within your MyFiles@bc account and within the MyFiles@bc accounts that other people are sharing with you.

My Searches:

  • Click my searches, then click search for files to search for files within your MyFiles@bc account and within the MyFiles@bc accounts that other people are sharing with you. Learn more about searching for files.
    Note: Your saved searches also appear here.
Click contacts to manage the list of people you share with.
Click options to access your Activity Tracker and General Preferences.

Options:

Your trash.
Click Sign out to sign out of your MyFiles@bc account.
  • Click sign out to sign out of your MyFiles@bc account.
 Click Help to open the MyFiles@bc online documentation.
  • Click help & support to open the MyFiles@bc online documentation.

 

Navigation toolbar

Use the navigation toolbar to manage your folders and files. Here is an example of the navigation toolbar (see Figure 4):

The following table lists and describes the navigation toolbar options:

Toolbar Button Click this toolbar button to...
Up button
Move up one folder from the currently selected directory/folder. Learn more about navigating folders.
Go to button
Move directly to a different folder. Learn more about navigating folders.
Web folder button
Create a Web folder mapped to your MyFiles@bc account from within the Web application. Learn about accessing your MyFiles@bc account through a Web folder on your Windows or Mac OS X (Tiger) computer. Note: Using Firefox or a Macintosh, the Web Folder option is not available.
Upload button
Upload files to the current folder. Learn more about uploading files.
New folder button
Create a new folder. Learn more about creating a new folder.
Move button
Move the selected file(s) or folder(s). Learn more about moving files and folders.
Copy button
Copy the selected file or folder. Learn more about copying files and folders.
Delete button
Delete the selected file(s) or folder(s). Learn more about deleting files.
Rename button
Rename the selected file or folder. Learn more about renaming files and folders.
Download as zip button
Download the selected file(s) or folder(s) as a zip file. Learn more about downloading files and folders as a zip file.
Email button
Email the selected file or folder. Learn more about emailing links to shared files and folders.

 

Your MyFiles@bc account contents

The contents of your MyFiles@bc account are shown in the main part of the page. Each file or folder is listed on a separate row that contains the item's name, date it was last modified, and size. For folders, the size represents the total size of all files within that folder, including subfolders.

Here is an example of the contents of a MyFiles@bc account (see Figure 5):

Sorting your files and folders

You can sort your files and folders by name, date of last modification, or size.

Your current folder path and refreshing your folder listing

The current folder path is located directly above the contents of your MyFiles@bc account (see Figure 7). Use this to verify the location of the current folder and to navigate to parent folders. You can also use the action icons directly to the right of the current folder path to manage the current folder. Learn more about the action icons.

Click Refresh button to refresh your current folder listing (see Figure 7). Important: Do not use your browser's refresh button to redisplay the current folder listing. Depending on your browser, you may not see the results you wanted. For example, Internet Explorer automatically loads your home folder listing and ignores the original page from where you started.

Your total size and quota

The right side of the gray bar shows (see Figure 8):

Selecting and deselecting all files and folders

You can select and deselect all of the files and folders currently displayed by clicking the box to the left of the Name column title (see Figure 9):

Using the action icons

Each row also features action icons (see Figure 10). You can use the action icons to get a quick look at the lock and sharing status of a file or folder.
