Using Fetch with InfoEagle

Using Fetch to FTP Files to InfoEagle

To FTP files to the InfoEagle web server from a Macintosh, the Office of Information Technology recommends that you use Fetch 3.0.1 or higher.

Download Fetch 3.0.3

*If you don't like Fetch, there are other FTP programs you can use. See the Information Technology FTP Clients page for more information.

1. After installing Fetch on your hard drive, launch the application.

2. The first window to appear will be the New Connection window, which will request information about what server to connect to, your User ID and your password. In the Host field, type in www.bc.edu, in the User ID field, type in your username, and in the Password field, type in your 5 digit pin #. In the Directory field type /usr/eaglenet/www/data. Finally, click on the OK button to connect to InfoEagle.

3.Locate your folder on the server by navigating through the levels of folders that are in the "path" to your files, that is, the folder names that appear in the address of your pages as it appears in your web browser. For example, if the URL of your web site were:
http://www.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/cas/geography/

You would first open (double-click) the "bc_org" folder,
then located and open the "avp" folder,
then locate and open the "cas" folder,
and finally you would find the "geography" folder.

4. After navigating to your folder, open it, and you will be in your directory on the server. In this directory you can add and delete files.

5.To add a file to the server, click on Put File...

6. This will bring up a dialogue box, asking you to navigate to the file you wish to place on the server. Locate the desired file on your computer and click Open.

7. Another dialogue box will appear asking you in what format to place the file on the server. If your file is an HTML file, then from the Format pull down menu select Text and click OK. This will place your HTML file on the server.

If your file is a GIF, JPEG, or PDF file, then from the Format pull down menu select Raw Data and click OK. This will place your file on the server in its native format.

Using Fetch to Rename Files and Directories on InfoEagle

1.Establish a connection to InfoEagle via Fetch as described above.

2.Select Remote from the menu bar and then select Rename Directory or File.

3.On the first line type the name of the file as it is on the server and on the second line type the new name. Then click OK.

Checking File Permissions

File permissions control who sees your web page. Your file permissions are usually fine when you upload files, but sometimes the bits for Group and Everyone access are turned off so you receive a "server error" message when trying to access your page as a viewer.

1.To set your file permissions using Fetch, click once on the filename in the Fetch window.

2.Select Set Permissions . . . from the Remote menu.

3.Set the permissions so that Owner has Read, Write and Execute permissions, but Group and Everyone only have Read and Excecute (never Write!) permissions. (see the figure below). Click OK.
