TM 509 Cross-Cultural Christian Ethics (Spring: 3)
Offered Periodically
This course considers models of fundamental Christian ethics in various
parts of the world in order to illustrate convergences and divergences in
terms of concerns, methods employed, conclusions reached, as well as prospects
for cross-cultural collaboration. Two historical novels set in Africa (Achebe)
and Asia (Endo) are read, along with works on cultural anthropology (Douglas),
fundamental moral theology (Bretzke), global theological hermeneutics (Schreiter),
a methodological reflection on the American moral tradition (Betsworth)
and the 1986 movie Mission will be viewed and discussed in the context of
Latin America liberation theology. A small group final project is required
of all.
