GM 224 Modern German Novels in Translation (Fall: 3)

This course will survey examples of the conventional narrative form along with experimental texts characteristic of modern writing. Each novel contains a masterful narrative and a unique expression of a fundamental human dilemma. The following works will be discussed in class: Thomas Mann, Buddenbrooks; Hermann Hesse, Steppenwolf; Franz Kafka, The Trial; Alfred Döblin, Berlin Alexanderplatz; Ernst Jünger, On the Marble Cliffs; Anna Seghers, The Seventh Cross; Wolfgang Koeppen, Pigeons on the Grass; Heinrich Böll, The Clown; Patrick Süskind, Perfume; Bernhard Schlink, The Reader. Readings will be arranged to reflect the chronology of Germany's dramatic history in the 20th century.
