GE 134 Exploring the Earth II (Spring: 4)

Prerequisite: GE 132 or permission of the instructor
Corequisite: GE 135
Satisfies Natural Science Core Requirement
Aimed towards Majors and Minors in the Department of Geology and Geophysics.
A continuation of GE 132 with an emphasis on geophysics. The application of the basic laws of physics to an understanding of the structure, makeup and evolution of the earth are discussed. Topics to be covered include the seismic structure, heat flow, magnetism and gravity field of the earth. The theory of Plate Tectonics will be presented and used as a framework for the presentation of the particular topics. The course may be taken without GE 132 by permission of the instructor. A two-hour laboratory is required.
