EN 615.01 Advanced Fiction Writing (Spring 2011-2012: 3)

Admission by Permission of Instructor (open to sophomores, juniors and seniors). This course provides encouragement, practice, and criticism for students who have demonstrated accomplishment in writing fiction. Students are expected to produce a steady stream of fiction throughout the semester and to revise their work deeply and extensively. The workshop format demands self-motivation and universal participation. Since students' stories are texts for class discussion, a generous willingness to respond to others' writing and to expose one's own work to such reactions is essential. Individual conferences with the instructor and readings of published texts will supplement our workshop discussions.

This course is "Entrance by Permission of Instructor". By November 7, 2011, please submit a writing sample of not more than 8 double-spaced pages of prose (preferably fiction; creative non-fiction is also acceptable) to Elizabeth Graver's mailbox in the English Department office. Your submission may be an excerpt from a larger piece; if so, indicate this on the manuscript. Also submit a paragraph explaining your interest in the course and a list of other college writing workshops you have taken. Include your e-mail address, class year and phone number. Writing samples and submitted as email attachments will be accepted only from students currently studying abroad. Students will be notified by November11as to whether or not they have been admitted to the course.
