EN 535 Advanced Creative Nonfiction: Writing Across Cultures (Fall: 3)
Using creative non-fiction as a tool for cross-cultural inquiry, students
will write a number of brief pieces and three long essays. Among the topics
we will examine are the immigrant experience, the traveler's experience,
and the writer as journalist-observer of a cultural "pocket" that brings
you into new terrain. We will engage with the complexities of writing about
a culture foreign to you, as well as the complexities of writing about your
own culture(s). Students will do research, interviewing and reporting.
Readings may include work by Anne Fadiman, Darcy Frey, Andre Aciman, Jamaica
Kincaid, Adrien LeBlanc, and Ruth Behar.
