EN 165.01 19th Century Irish Literature Survey (Spring 2008-2009: 3)
** This course is most suitable for First-year and Sophomore students.
Students contemplating an Irish Studies Minor and/or exploring study abroad
options are also welcome.
This course will survey 19th century Irish literature written in English,
including fiction (Edgeworth, Owenson, Carleton, Lawless, and Somerville
and Ross), poetry (Ferguson, Mangan, Allingham, and Davis), and drama (Boucicault,
Wilde, Shaw and Yeats). In the process we will consider the social, political
and historical contexts represented by this body of literature, e.g., the
Union between Great Britain and Ireland, the Young Ireland Movement, the
Great Famine, the Fenian, Land War and Home Rule Movements, the Anglo-Irish
Ascendancy, and the origins of the Irish Literary Revival. Classes will
be a mixture of lecture and discussion. Students will be expected to contribute
to class discussion, participate in one group presentation, write two short
papers, and take a final exam.
