EN 143.01 American Literary History III (Spring 2007-2008: 3)
This course is a survey of American literature from the First World War
to the present. This was, of course, an amazingly prolific era full of
literary and intellectual debates that were often responding to tumultuous
events taking place in the world. We will make sense of many major debates,
work through important novels and other forms of literary writings, and
consider how much of a role events like the Great Depression, World War
II, the rise of the New and Third World Left, and the emergence of neo-liberalism
have had in shaping literature and debate. A draft of the syllabus can be
found at www2.bc.edu/~songm.
