EN 133.04 Narrative and Interpretation (Spring 2007-2008: 3)
This course seeks to problemmatize what seems unproblematic so that we can
approach the act of reading and thinking from a fresh perspective. We begin
by looking at something that hasn't, and perhaps still isn't, considered
literature. From there, we begin a dialogue between literary and critical
texts, and often works that seem a combination of the two. Overall, this
course challenges preconceived ideas about what literature is and introduces
you to a particular way of being in the world that active and critical thinking
encourages.Course readings will include Art Spiegelman's Maus, Sigmund Freud's
Dora, Michel Foucault's History of Sexuality Vol. 1, Toni Morrison's Beloved,
and Junot Diaz's The Short Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. A draft of the syllabus
can be found at www2.bc.edu/~songm.
