EN 133.01 Narrative and Interpretation (Fall 2008-2009: 3)
This section will develop a set of questions and a critical vocabulary that
will open up the many ways works of narrative are patterned. We will think
about such matters as: how narrators are constructed, how interior consciousness
is represented, how characters are set in relation to one another, how the
movement of time is indicated, how plots and subplots are placed in dialogue
with one another, and how images and descriptive passages resonate within
the work as a whole. Our readings will include short fiction, a nonfiction
narrative and one or two novels from the 19th or 20th centuries.
