EN 131.02 Studies in Poetry (Spring 2007-2008: 3)
What are the questions that will open a poem to the reader's imagination?
How can we talk about the internal drama of a lyric poem? How do the language
and the concerns of poetry change from the early 17th to the late 20th
centuries? This course will pursue such questions through class discussions
of individual poems, emphasizing the process of reading, questioning, and
writing lucid interpretive essays. Students will write a series of informal
meditations, three short papers on assigned topics, and a final paper on
a contemporary poet of their choice.
