EN 082.13 Literature & Society (Fall 2007-2008: 3)
Satisfies Literature Core Requirement
The section will focus on the question of American identity. We will explore
how writers and filmmakers have explored the question of what it means to
be an American, from the settling of North America to the present. To what
extent have Americans agreed on a stable set of characteristics that define
themselves? To what extent have they articulated multiple and competing
visions of who they are? We will engage with works from a range of genres
and periods. Texts may include Frederick Douglass¿ autobiography, Ralph
Waldo Emerson¿s essays, Chang Rae-lee¿s novel A Gesture Life, and
the movie Dances with Wolves.
