BI 551 Cell Biology of the Nervous System (Spring: 3)
Prerequisite:
ONE of the following (BI304, BI414, BI440)
Not Offered in 2011-12
This course will focus primarily on central nervous system (CNS) glial cells.
These cells make up approximately 90% of the human brain, but are less well
studied than neurons. The course will be split into three parts. Part I
covers neuroglial cell morphology and physiology. Part II covers functions
of glial cells, including myelin, immune functions, the blood brain barrier,
and influence of glial cells on neurons. Part III focuses on disease and
neuroglial cells, including mechanisms of glial cell injury and recovery
of neural function. Autoimmune and infectious diseases, glial cell derived
tumors, strokes, and Alzheimer's disease are covered.
