BI 523 Immunity and Infectious Disease (Spring: 3)
Prerequisite:
BI457 or BI414 or instructor permission
Satisfies the advanced experience requirement for the Biology major.
This course will focus on immune cells, the immune system's response to
viral and bacterial infection and the pathogenesis resulting from these
responses. Topics will include questions of self and non-self in immune
responses, the role of mucosal immunity and gut flora in immune responses
and pathogenesis, AIDS pathogenesis, vaccines, and cutting edge technological
approaches to immune therapy. Reading materials will consist of a basic
immunology text, classical primary papers, and research reports.
