FB96 INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC SEASON HIGHLIGHTS: 1994-1995 Boston College Fact Book, 1995-1996 Contact: factbook@bc.edu Date Posted: Oct 6 1995 ================================================================ INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC SEASON HIGHLIGHTS 1994-1995 BASEBALL - Head Coach Moe Maloney Team finished with a 21-24 mark, 8-13 in the BIG EAST; captained by seniors Steve Marciano and Mark Bettencourt; Senior Curt Romboli and junior Brian Sankey earned All-Conference first team honors; sophomore Kevin Penwell earned All-BIG EAST second team honors and won the 1995 conference batting title with a.439 average; Matt Dorsey, Craig Katz and Joel Malo earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors; Katz and Penwell earned GTE Academic All-America District I honors. MEN'S BASKETBALL - Head Coach Jim O'Brien Team finished with a 9-19 mark; senior Marc Molinsky became the first BC player to earn BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors; Molinsky also earned CoSIDA/GTE Academic All-America honors; sophomore Danya Abrams earned BIG EAST First Team accolades and finished the season as the nation's second-highest scoring sophomore; Molinsky and sophomore Brad Christianson earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - Head Coach Cathy Inglese Senior captain Joanie Gallagher became BC's first student-athlete to be selected as a Fulbright Scholarship candidate; sophomore Holly Porter earned BIG EAST All-Conference third team honors; Gallagher, senior Tia Manhardt and junior Jennifer Passonno earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors. MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - Head Coach Randy Thomas Captured the National Catholic Championship title; finished third at BIG EAST Championship; senior Chris Georgules and junior John Wassenaar both qualified for the NCAA Championship in Fayetteville, Arkansas. WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - Head Coach Randy Thomas Finished the season ranked 19th in the nation; sent seven runners (Amy Lyman, Kerry Lyman, Jodie Lake, Caroline Pimblett, Ann Baldelli, Melissa Supler, and Fran Spaulding) to the NCAA Championship; placed second at National Catholic Championship and 4th at the BIG EAST Championship. MEN'S FENCING - Head Coach Syd Fadner Junior Keun Ok went 12-0 at the New England Intercollegiate Championship to lead the Eagles to their first New England title; Ok teamed with junior Mike Warring to win the weapons squad award for most victories in the tournament (21); five team members qualified for the NCAA Regional Championship - Ok, Joshua Lewis, Dien Nguyen, John Peltonen and John Wood - the most qualifiers in the program's history. WOMEN'S FENCING - Head Coach Syd Fadner Senior Hien Nguyen finished an outstanding career by qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championship; the foil squad qualified as an alternate for the NCAA Regionals for the first time in the program's history; freshman Mary Keefe also qualified for the Regionals. FIELD HOCKEY - Head Coach Sherren Granese Finished season 15-6-2 and ranked No. 8 nationally; captured its first-ever BIG EAST Tournament Championship and earned first NCAA Tournament berth in program's history; defeated Northeastern, 3-2, before losing to North Carolina in national quarterfinals; senior Julie Obear captured second consecutive BIG EAST scoring title and was named to the BIG EAST All-Conference first team; Obear also was named a second team All-American and Boston 4 MVP; senior Meaghan Reilly earned Regional All-America first team honors and senior Paula Boukouvalas earned second team accolades; sophomore goalie Sarah Egnaczyk was named the BIG EAST Championship Tournament's Most Outstanding Performer; head coach Sherren Granese earned Northeast Coach of the Year Honors. FOOTBALL - Head Coach Dan Henning The Eagles finished with a 7-4-1 record, including a 12-7 victory over Kansas State in the Jeep Eagle Aloha Bowl on Christmas Day - the team's third consecutive post-season appearance. Senior tight end Pete Mitchell, a consensus All-America selection, set the BC record for passes caught in a career (190) and reception yardage (2,388). LB Stephen Boyd, who also received All-America honors, established a school record for career tackles - 540. In addition to Mitchell and Boyd, punter Jeff Beckley, RB David Green, OT Pete Kendall, OG Greg Landry, DE Mike Mamula and NG Tim Morabito were named to the All-BIG EAST Conference team. The Eagles played their home games in newly-renovated and expanded (capacity 44,500) Alumni Stadium, and their first win in the new facility was an impressive 30-11 victory over nationally-ranked Notre Dame. BC finished the '94 season ranked No. 22 in the USAToday/CNN Poll and were 23rd in the final AP listing. MEN'S GOLF - Head Coach Peter Bigham Junior Stephen Shunk earned All-New England honors, finishing sixth in a field of 236 players at 1994 NEIGA Championship in October; Shunk earned a berth in the NCAA Eastern Regional Championships; team finished eighth among 48 teams at the New England competition; Shunk topped the field at the 1994 Yale Fall Invitational and was among top finishers at the 1994 BIG EAST Championship; junior Shane Dooley finished third and led the team to a third-place finish in 1994 ECAC Championship Northern New England Qualifier. WOMEN'S GOLF - Head Coach Natalie Galligan Senior Cathy Burgess led the team with strong performances at Dartmouth Invitational, BC Invitational, Mount Holyoke Fall Invitational and Yale Spring Opener; sophomore Gretchen Kattke and senior Melissa Gibbons also performed well at various tournaments. MEN'S ICE HOCKEY - Head Coach Jerry York Senior co-captain Ryan Haggerty led the Eagles in scoring (45 points) and finished his career with 113 points; sophomore goaltender Greg Taylor established a HOCKEY EAST regular-season record by making 60 stops in a loss at BU; freshman Jamie O'Leary tallied 29 points -- the most points by a freshman since Ted Crowley scored 31 in 1989-90. WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY - Head Coach Tom O'Malley In its first season with varsity status, the team finished 15-10-1 overall; the squad defeated McGill University and Middlebury College to win the Middlebury Invitational; the team recorded a 6- 5 upset against ECAC Division I powerhouse St. Lawrence; senior forward Kate Antos, the team MVP, led the team with 52 points. MEN'S LACROSSE - Head Coach Ed Moy Team finished with a 5-10 record against the toughest schedule in the program's history; team earned a berth in the ECAC Division I Tournament at Colgate, defeating Canisius in the first round, before losing to Colgate in the title game; captained by seniors Marc Deragon and Brian Shanley; Matt Prybylski (41 points) and freshman Kevin McLane (40 points) led the team in scoring; junior Greg Lally earned All-New England honorable mention honors. WOMEN'S LACROSSE - Head Coach Sherren Granese Team finished with a 5-8 record; Bryn Chave and Gaffney McGrath led the team in scoring with 22 points each; Beth Holleran and Kristen O'Brien served as team captains; sophomore goalie Megan McElvogue finished the season as the nation's leader in save percentage (.695). SAILING - Head Coach Norm Reid The sailing team won three Trophy Regattas during fall competition - the Smith Cup at MIT; the Sharpe Cup at Brown; and the Dixie Cup at UNH. In spring sailing, the team was ranked No. 14 in the nation as of mid-April. Freshmen skippers Anne Bohlen and Peter Spaulding are both nationally-ranked helmsmen and have qualified to sail in the World 420 championships in Australia (men's) and Europe (women's). The sailing team also took part in an innovative "learn-to-sail" program for both inner city children and children with special needs at the Courageous Sailing Center in Boston. MEN'S SKIING - Head Coach Bill Toof Earned the Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference championship; also captured the U.S. Collegiate Eastern Regional title; finished 10th at the national championship, featuring six All-Conference skiers, including captain Mark Mezzanotte. WOMEN'S SKIING - Head Coach Bill Toof Earned the Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference championship; raced to an incredible third-place finish at the U.S. Collegiate Skiing Championship in McCall, Idaho; team was led by two-time All- Americans Jessica Hult (ECSC and Regional champion) and captain Jill Cupoli (All-East). MEN'S SOCCER - Head Coach Ed Kelly Finished with a 7-7-3 record, 5-2-1 in the BIG EAST; earned a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament; junior midfielder Paul Keegan earned BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year honors; Keegan and senior back Carlos Casas captured All-Conference First Team accolades; junior goalkeeper Marc Bala earned All-Conference second team honors; Chris Bauer, Marius Lund and Sean Yokota earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors. WOMEN'S SOCCER - Head Coach Terez Biancardi Finished with a 10-8-1 record and advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament Championship game; senior Kendra Molina earned All-New England first team honors; Molina and senior captains Mary Byrne and Kathleen McMahon earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors. SOFTBALL - Head Coach Nancy McGuire Finished with a 29-23 mark, including a 13-7 BIG EAST record (second in the conference); captained by senior Sue Corwin and juniors Kelly Cross and Liz Walker; Walker and sophomore Alexis Beckman continued to be one of the top pitching duos in the Northeast Region; Corwin and juniors Marci Cornell and Kate Giardi earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors; Corwin also earned GTE Academic All-America District I honors; Obear and Deb Nasitka earned All-BIG EAST Conference first team honors, while Beckman captured All-Conference second team accolades. MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING - Head Coach Tom Groden Finished fourth at the New England Championships; senior John Webber earned team MVP honors for the second consecutive season after setting school records in the 50 and 100 freestyle events at the BIG EAST Championships; seniors Daniel Chestow and Carl Giordono and junior Christopher Kondrath earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star accolades. WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING - Head Coach Tom Groden Finished with a 9-4-1 record in dual meet competition and finished third at the New England Championships; sophomore Amy Dunleavey earned team MVP honors; senior Katelyn Lindstrom and juniors Kristen Peters and Megan Lammon earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors. MEN'S TENNIS - Head Coach Mark Burns Registered a 3-2 record on its trip to Hawaii; earned back-to-back BIG EAST wins over Seton Hall and Georgetown; James Robles (#1 singles) and Marc Fitzgerald (#3/4 singles) led team in singles play, and teamed up for a winning doubles record. WOMEN'S TENNIS - Head Coach Mark Burns Team registered a 5-2 mark on its trip to Florida; Donna Lomenzo is team's lone senior; Hope McAndrew earned more than 20 wins at #1 singles; Kara Swanson won Flight 3 singles title at Eastern Collegiate Championships; Lomenzo and Sarah Malone (Flight 2 doubles) and Swanson and Mary Moulton (Flight 3 doubles) teamed to win Eastern Collegiate doubles titles. MEN'S INDOOR TRACK - Head Coach Randy Thomas Finished second at New England Championships; at the NCAA Championships, sophomore Mark McGehearty earned All-America honors in the 35-lb weight throw and senior Chris Georgules placed 10th in the 3000 meters to earn All-America accolades. WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK - Head Coach Randy Thomas Placed third at New England Championships; Angie Graham earned All-America honors in two events at the NCAA Championships - the mile and as the anchor on the distance medley relay team; other members of the relay team earning All-America honors were Caroline Pimblett, Mary Alice Brady and Amy Lyman. MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - Head Coach Randy Thomas Finished second at tri meet with Massachusetts and Boston University; Sean and Mark McGehearty (hammer) all qualified for the NCAA Championships at the University of Tennessee; Mark McGehearty (12th overall, seventh American) earned All-America accolades. WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK - Head Coach Randy Thomas Anne Rajotte, Kerry Lyman and Melissa Supler served as team captains; team placed second at tri-meet with Massachusetts and Boston University; Angie Graham (1500 meters), Amy Lyman (3000 meters) and Andrea Melton (100-meter hurdles) all qualified for the NCAA Championships at the University of Tennessee; Melton (12th overall, eighth American) and Graham (sixth) earned All- America honors. VOLLEYBALL - Head Coach Nadine Lilavois Finished the season with a 16-16 record, including wins against BIG EAST foes Syracuse and St. John's; Nadine Lilavois collected her 100th career victory as a head coach when the team defeated Army, 3-1, at the Virginia Commonwealth Tournament; junior Christine Morelli, and senior co-captains Jeannette Gaehwiler and Melody Douglas were named to the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team; Deanna Herman was selected MVP of the Beantown Invitational. WATER POLO - Head Coach G.T. Ladd For the second consecutive season the team clinched a berth in the Eastern Water Polo Association playoffs; junior Marcus Williams, the team MVP, became the first BC player in five years to earn a spot on the All-Eastern Conference Team; senior captain Dan Mulgrew established a Boston College single-season record with 42 steals; 10 of the team's 16 players were recognized for their academic performance. WRESTLING - Head Coach Rod Buttry Senior Jim Gallagher placed second and classmates Emerson Wickwire and Jim Chidiac finished third at the Big Northeast Championships; the Eagles won the Plymouth State Invitational -- the individual winners were Gallagher (118), Mike Odiotti (126), Luke Renjilian- Burgy (134) and Ron Minutello (190).
