The renovation and expansion of Alumni Stadium involved the construction of 32,500 new seats. There are 12,000 previously existing seats (the East and West side upper decks). Some 20,000 lower level seats were removed before the new construction began. Capacity of Alumni Stadium is now 44,500. Among the other improvements to the Stadium are: <> 24 new luxury boxes - 12 in each end zone. There are 12 seats in each box. <> Two 4-color matrix scoreboards, manufactured by Daktronics. The Stadium also has two additional message boards, two game- in-progress information boards, four 25-second clocks and eight back-lit advertising panels. <> New lighting for practice opportunities, with all lamps located at the mid-level section of the sideline stands. <> A new state-of-the-art distributive sound system, which includes a large number of speakers placed throughout the stadium, instead of the former "cluster-speaker" system. This enables selective use of a lesser number of speakers for smaller audiences. <> Six new concession stands. <> Three new souvenir stands. <> Eight new rest rooms. <> Eight new First Aid rooms, each with a treatment area and waiting room. <> A new security office. <> Four new elevators. <> Wider aisles and handrails throughout. <> Well-lit and wider field-level concourse. A new walking concourse at the mid-level of the stadium. <> 450 wheelchair-accessible seats. A speaker enhancement system for the hearing impaired is also available. <> New graphics and signage throughout the stadium. Utilized in the construction process were: <> 500 tons of reinforced steel bars inside cement; <> 1,000+ precast pieces of concrete trim; <> 1,100 tons of structural steel; <> 9,200 cubic yards of cast-in-place concrete; <> 25,000 cubic yards of excavated material; <> 85,000 new face bricks; <> 110,000 concrete blocks; and <> 205,000 square feet of concrete walking area installed. Architect for the Alumni Stadium project was Architectural Resources Cambridge, Inc. (ARC). Principal contractor was Richard White Sons of Auburndale, Mass. Construction began in early February.
