FB94 INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC SEASON HIGHLIGHTS: 1993-1994 Boston College Fact Book, 1993-1994 Contact: factbook@bc.edu Date Posted: Apr 11 1995 ================================================================ INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC SEASON HIGHLIGHTS 1993-1994 Baseball - Head Coach Moe Maloney Michael Martin earned All-BIG EAST first team honors; Martin continued torrid hitting pace of 1993 season, finishing with .441 batting average; team received solid contributions from newcomers David Burnes, Craig Katz, and Kevin Penwell. Men's Basketball - Head Coach Jim O'Brien Advanced to the NCAA Tournament's "Elite Eight"; defeated top-ranked North Carolina in tournament's second round; finished with a 23-11 mark; Bill Curley, Howard Eisley, and Danya Abrams earned All-BIG EAST honors; Marc Molinsky earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors. Women's Basketball - Head Coach Cathy Inglese Freshman Holly Porter earned ECAC Division I and BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the Year honors; senior Kerry Curran earned ECAC Division I and All-BIG EAST first team honors; Curran also earned BIG EAST/Soft & Dri Academic Challenge Post Graduate Scholarship. Men's Cross Country - Head Coach Randy Thomas Team was consistently ranked in the New England Top 10; freshman Darren Keenan had an impressive season, including a third-place finish at the Murray Keating Invitational at the University of Maine. Women's Cross Country - Head Coach Randy Thomas Team finished fourth at the BIG EAST Championships; team also finished fourth in both the Murray Keating Invitational and the Boston College Invitational; team was ranked No. 4 in New England. Men's Fencing - Head Coach Syd Fadner Sophomore standouts John Peltonen and Keun Ok, the latter an alternate for the Northeast Regionals, led the team and will be the nucleus of next season's team. Women's Fencing - Head Coach Syd Fadner Junior Hien Nguyen, BC's top gun, finished with an astounding 34-2 individual mark in leading the Eagles to a third-place Northeast Fencing Conference finish. Field Hockey - Head Coach Sherren Granese Team qualified for the BIG EAST Championships; junior Julie Obear led the BIG EAST in scoring and earned All-Conference second team honors. Senior tri-captain Christine Curley also earned second team honors. Obear, Paula Boukavalas, Meg Reilly, and Kristen Fiederlein earned Boston 4 All-Star honors. Freshman goalie Sarah Egnaczyk was voted Boston 4 Rookie of the Year. Football - Head Coach Tom Coughlin Team's 9 wins included a dramatic 41-39 victory over No. 1 ranked Notre Dame; Eagles beat Virginia 31-13 in Carquest Bowl in Fort Lauderdale, FL - BC's second consecutive New Year's Day bowl appearance; QB Glen Foley was named BIG EAST and ECAC Offensive Player of the Year; TE Pete Mitchell was selected to several All-America teams. Men's Golf - Head Coach Peter Bigham Senior Brian Gorczynski led a balanced team that tied for first (of 21 teams) in the ECAC Qualifier at Waterville, Maine on Oct. 7; team won Mass. State title on April 14 and the Greater Boston Championship on April 19. Women's Golf - Head Coach Natalie Galligan Senior Morgen McLaughlin and junior Cathy Burgess paced an overachieving team, which highlighted its season by placing third of 13 teams at the Yale Invitational (Oct. 2-3); hosted BC Invitational (finishing fourth of seven teams). Men's Ice Hockey - Head Coach Steve Cedorchuk 1994 Beanpot Tournament Champions; freshman goaltender Greg Taylor named Beanpot Tourney MVP and earned conference All- Rookie team honors; senior captain Michael Spalla earned All- New England and All-Conference second team honors; Spalla was also honored with HOCKEY EAST's Len Ceglarski Sportsmanship Award. Men's Lacrosse - Head Coach Ed Moy Laurens Goff and Rich Merklinger selected All-New England Lacrosse honorable mention; all three selected to play in 1994 New England Division I All-Star game; Goff finished career second among all-time scorers and assists leaders at BC. Women's Lacrosse - Head Coach Sherren Granese Team earned program's first-ever berth in ECAC Tournament; currently ranked No. 15 in the country; upset nationally- ranked New Hampshire; Christine Curley earned All-America North Region first team honors; Shannon Doyle earned All- America North Region second team honors. Men's Sailing - Head Coach Norm Reid Ranked 16th in national poll; have won some major regattas and been invited to National Ocean Racing Regatta (Kennedy Cup) at United States Naval Academy. Women's Sailing - Head Coach Norm Reid Strong showings at NCAA Qualifying Regatta at Harvard and at Yale Intersectional; looking forward to two blue-chip recruits. Men's Skiing - Head Coach Bill Toof Led by Pete Christensen, Greg Howells, and Jim Ferris, the men's team placed second in the competitive Osborne Division and seventh nationally at Great Gorge Resort. Women's Skiing - Head Coach Bill Toof Jessica Hult, a transfer, won first team All-America honors in leading BC to a first-place finish in the Osborne Division and a fourth-place finish at the National Championships. Men's Soccer - Head Coach Ed Kelly Advanced to the championship game of the BIG EAST Tournament; Paul Keegan earned All-New England and All- Conference honors; Paul Fahey and Brian Siracusa earned All- Conference honors; Keith O'Halloran became third consecutive BC player to earn BIG EAST Rookie of the Year honors. Women's Soccer - Head Coach Terez Bonorden Advanced to the ECAC Championship semifinals; sophomore Allison David received New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association All-New England second team honors. Softball - Head Coach Nancy McGuire Earned fifth seed in the BIG EAST Tournament; Alexis Beckman earned BIG EAST Co-Rookie of the Year honor; Angela Macsenti earned All-BIG EAST first team honors; three players earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors. Men's Swimming and Diving - Head Coach Tom Groden Placed fifth in the New England Championships and third in the National Catholics; Nicholas Satovick ('94) and John Webber ('95) were named team MVPs. Women's Swimming and Diving - Head Coach Tom Groden Placed first in the New England Championships; third in the National Catholics; Coach Tom Groden selected as the 1994 New England Coach of the Year; Megan Lammon ('96) was named Team MVP for the second year in a row. Men's Tennis - Head Coach Mark Burns Competed at the 1994 BIG EAST Championships in Miami, FL; earned impressive wins over Massachusetts, Seton Hall, and Connecticut. Women's Tennis - Head Coach Mark Burns Team won the New England title; earned impressive wins over New Hampshire, Columbia, and the College of Charleston; Hope McAndrew defeated North Carolina's No. 1 player. Men's Indoor Track - Head Coach Randy Thomas Finished fourth at New England Championships; freshman twins Sean and Mark McGehearty both were provisional qualifiers for the NCAAs; Mark was crowned New England champion in the weight throw; freshman Darren Keenan and senior captain Chris Georgules were crowned New England champions in the mile and 3,000 meters respectively; Georgules was also named All-America in the 3,000 meters; the Distant Medley team-Keenan, Georgules, Tom Hunt, and Mike Burke-captured the IC4A Championship. Women's Indoor Track - Head Coach Randy Thomas Finished third at the New England Championships; Distance Medley team Tiffany Young (200 meters, 500 meters) and Diane Connolly (1,000 meters) were crowned New England champions; Young earned All-America honors by setting a school record in the 200 meters. Men's Outdoor Track - Head Coach Randy Thomas Finished fourth of 40 teams at New England Championships (May 13-14); second place in each of two tri-meets. Women's Outdoor Track - Head Coach Randy Thomas Placed third of 19 teams at New England Championships; defeated Maine in dual meet; Tiffany Young became third trackster in four years to earn "Eagle of the Year" honor. Volleyball - Head Coach Nadine Lilavois Senior captain Jeanne Broussard, junior Melody Douglas, and junior captain Jeanette Gaehwiler named to 1993-94 Women's BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team; Gaehwiler named to 1993 Eagle Classic All-Tournament team. Water Polo - Head Coach G.T. Ladd Team clinched a berth in the Eastern Water Polo Association playoffs with a win over MIT; senior Michael Burns captured 1993 Team MVP honors. Wrestling - Head Coach Rod Buttry Finished with a 7-9 mark against a tough schedule that featured three Top 30 teams; three wrestlers placed third in Northeast Championships-Jim Gallagher, Michael Odiotti, and Ronald Minutello; season highlighted by a win over WPI.
