Resident Assistant

The Resident Assistant (RA) is a full-time, professional staff member of the International Boarding Program who develops, coordinates and maintains a program within the community, which strives to provide a positive intellectual, emotional and social living environment for students in the school’s on-campus, male residential dormitory, housing 10-20 students. The RA is selected on the basis of displaying sensitivity to and interest in people, neutrality, respect for dignity and worth of the individual, open-mindedness on issues, degree of empathy, ability to handle autonomy, make decisions and his/her success within an academic community. The main responsibility of the Resident Advisor is to provide support, encouragement and leadership to his/her community. The RA should be available to his/her residents and empower his/her residents to grow and develop as good citizens. The RA helps to facilitate a positive living and academic environment. This is accomplished by the following:

• Building relationships with the residents in the community

• Assisting residents in developing relationships with each other

• Holding residents accountable for their behavior

• Educating residents on the policies and procedures of Residential Life

• Promoting student involvement in school and dorm committees, activities and events

• Role modeling positive attitudes and behaviors

• Helping to facilitate an environment that allows students to meet their academic goals

• Providing opportunities to for residents to look at the world from different perspectives

• Serving as a resource

• Providing helping skills for residents in need

• Supporting the Residence Director

The Resident Assistants are also responsible for the following administrative and collateral tasks:

• Check-in and check-out of residents

• Keeping track of resident occupancy

• Documenting policy violations

• Reporting maintenance and facility concerns and conducting Health and Safety Inspections

• Duty responsibility (depending on placement)

• Other duties as assigned by Residence Director

 

 

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and previous work experience in a residential life/housing facility at a boarding school or college. Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, and demonstrated leadership are required. The incumbent will also be required to live in the residence hall 10 months per year.

 

Work Environment

Most of the work of the incumbent is carried out within a generally accessible, safe, indoor environment. The incumbent will be required to operate a personal computer and associated equipment such as computer printers as well as other office equipment used in day-to-day operations. The incumbent will be required to live in the residence hall 10 months per year. The incumbent will have 'on-call' responsibilities and will be required to respond to emergency and other situations during and after normal business hours.
