DIRECTOR OF FAITH FOR LIFE & YOUTH MINISTRY
St. Joseph's Church Penfield, NY
Reports to: Pastor
Position Purpose: The position is to implement the parish vision of lifelong learning, with special emphasis and responsibility for youth ministry (grades 6-12) and faith formation in the context of family faith- children and parents, together (K-12). The parish highly values faith formation in the context of family and the importance of learning for all adults, especially parents, as well as the youth of the parish.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Active and practicing Roman Catholic
- Master’s Degree in Theology or Religious Education, or working toward it.
- Experience in working with a multi-age demographic, especially youth
- Experience developing parish youth ministry.
- Familiar with General Directory for Catechesis, National Directory for Catechesis, and Principles from USCCB Pastoral Plan, ‘Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us’ and Whole Community Catechesis.
- Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries.
- High energy, flexible with scheduling (some evenings and weekends required).
- Strong team player, collaborator, and communicator.
- Proficient with MS software (Word, PowerPoint), social media, and website content management; in tune with emerging communications technologies.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborates with the pastor and pastoral staff in implementing the mission of the parish. This is accomplished by participating in the comprehensive planning, implementation and evaluation of parish goals and objectives, with specific focus on youth ministry and family faith. Serves as a professional resource to parish staff regarding faith formation for families, teens, and children.
- Is responsible for the growth and vitality of the Faith for Life Leadership Team, providing prayer, catechesis for the team, preparing agendas in collaboration with the chairs, and maintaining dynamic communication with the members.
- Assures the development of youth ministry in grades 6 to 12 that fosters holistic spiritual formation and builds community among youth and parents. This includes:
-Sunday F.A.I.T.H. Night Formation Director for both middle school and senior high youth, and their parents;
-Director of Summer Faith Formation – Middle School;
-Director for Confirmation preparation;
-Facilitates sacramental initiation for children and youth ages 7-17(RCIA model);
-Collaborator with youth, parents and staff on service/outreach opportunities;
-Collaborator with youth, parents and staff on community building events;
-Communicator with youth and parents in a variety of media (website, bulletin, email/Constant Contact, Facebook, etc).
- Develops and facilitates Family Faith Formation both as a gathered community at St. Joseph’s and among families gathered in their homes.
- Provides oversight of Summer and Wednesday night Faith Formation for grades K-5 with Program Coordinator.
- Develops and facilitates comprehensive, ongoing catechist formation for all who are sharing faith with children and youth.
- Works with Faith for Life staff to continuously evaluate and improve processes and curricula. Makes recommendations regarding best practices with regard to staff and volunteer resources.
- Actively participates in monthly Parish Pastoral Council meetings and retreats along with Faith for Life Leadership Team chairs.
- Presents a Faith for Life update at weekly staff meetings.
- Participates on a regular basis in the parish celebrations of SundayEucharist, with particular emphasis on the Sunday 9:00 am, 11:00 am, and 5:00 pm liturgies, along with Saturday 5:00 pm and Sunday 7:30 am. Is a role model for youth as a lector, Minister of Communion, and in other forms of liturgical leadership.
- Is a member of the baptismal preparation team, working with individual families.
- Collaborates with (but does not have direct responsibility for) Sacramental Preparation for First Eucharist and First Reconciliation with Director of Worship; and Adult Formation, RCIA and Small Christian Communities/Bible Study with Pastoral Associates.
- Is responsible for Faith for Life budget.
- Communicates with the parish concerning initiatives and directives from the Diocese of Rochester and other related USCCB and National Religious Education Forums
