Purpose:

There are two primary purposes: (1) The Director of the Hispanic Institute is responsible for the successful promotion, development, and administration of the annual summer Instituto Hispano in Berkeley. (2) Additionally, the Director is responsible for implementation of the June 2012 strategic recommendations of the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University Instituto Task Force.

I. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1.  The Director of the Hispanic Institute is responsible for the successful promotion, development and administration of the annual summer Instituto Hispano in Berkeley and other Instituto programs and events.
     *   Institutionalize the Institute within JST-SCU, in collaboration with the Registrar, Business Office, Office of Enrollment Management and Marketing, and Archives.
     *   Collaborate with and provide meaningful guidance to the Office of Enrollment Management and Marketing for increasing recruitment and improving marketing of the Institute.
     *   Establish and operationalize formal Advisory Board procedures, including development of Instituto Board membership commensurate to the strategic vision.
     *   Recruit faculty with the goal of ensuring curricular continuity and suitable pedagogy of Institute.
     *   Represent JST in regional and national Hispanic fora, such as the annual Seminario, RECOSS, and the Federacion de Institutos Pastorales (FIP).
     *   Serve as an effective and respected leader externally, as well as a colleague and team member at JST.
  2.  Additionally, the Director is responsible for implementation of the recommendations of the Instituto Hispano Strategic Task Force, including the following:
     *   Provide entrepreneurial leadership and strategic vision for the Instituto, guided by the Recommendations of the Instituto Hispano Strategic Task Force.
     *   Serve as JST point person for JST SCU response to Bishops of Region XI Higher Education Initiative in collaboration with the Director of the Graduate Program in Pastoral Ministry.
     *   Conduct programing outreach to other Episcopal Regions, including Region XII.
     *   Serve as JST point person for the National Hispanic Symposium.

II. Other Responsibilities

  1.  Prepare annual budget for approval.
  2.  Recruit participants to meet enrollment goals, as established by the Dean on an annual basis.
  3.  Coordinate with the Advisory Board and Dean the recruitment and hiring of Institute faculty.
  4.  Recruit and communicate with prospective students.
  5.  Develop annual assessment processes for Institute, including for student outcomes.
  6.  Prepare annual report by deadline as established by the Dean.
  7.  Integrate student evaluations of faculty into the planning cycle.
  8.  Provide hands-on leadership of the Institute.
  9.  Prepare reports as requested by the Dean or Provost.
  10. Collaborate with Registrar to upgrade and maintain academic records and Institute?s archives.
  11. Collaborate with Development Office to identify and tap new markets.
  12. Identify new funding sources and tap new markets for students working with key partners at SCU that can help further the mission and goals of the Institute.
  13. Explore new delivery models, including but not limited to online, weekend and Diocesan distance learning, as specified in the Strategic Task Force Report.
  14. Regularly consult with the Director of Intercultural Initiatives and report to the Associate Academic Dean.

III. Qualifications

  1.  Master's degree in theology or related field, doctorate preferred.
  2.  Proficiency in spoken and written Spanish and English.
  3.  Intercultural competency.
  4.  Five years' experience in Hispanic adult leadership formation.
  5.  Three years' experience in teaching or administration in Higher Education
  6.  Demonstrated administrative abilities.
  7.  Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  8.  Demonstrated knowledge of theological and ministerial trends in the Catholic Church.
  9.  Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues and partners.
  10. Proven ability to initiate and grow programs.
  11. Strong organizational skills, ability to simultaneously handle multiple tasks, ability to work under pressure.
  12. Understanding of and support for the values and ideals of Catholic Jesuit education.
  13. Proven ability to work effectively and knowledgeably with Catholic dioceses.
  14. Experience of remote delivery of educational content or willingness to learn.
