Our Dual-Degree Programs

the benefits of earning two master's degrees

Boston College is committed to educating women and men for leadership and service to the church and the world, and the great academic resources at BC and in the Boston area prepare students for faith filled careers in numerous fields and disciplines that span the University.

With this in mind, the STM partners with four other BC graduate schools to offer dual-degree programs.  Students can earn an M.A. in Theology and Ministry (academic year) or an M.A. in Pastoral Ministry (summer only) along with one of the following degrees:

The standard dual-degree curriculum combines a 48 credit M.A. in Theology and Ministry or a 35 credit M.A. in Pastoral Ministry with a 48 or 60 credit degree from one of the other schools.  An average of 12 credits taken is applied to both degrees, which allows students to finish in three years. The added skill-set and flexibility of a dual-degree program gives graduates the academic competency to work in multiple fields.

The dual degree program is ideal for students who have experience and passion in both fields, and want to incorporate both into their future jobs and ministries. From a theological and ministerial vantage point, the dual-degree programs prepare students well for a variety of ministries in the church including campus ministry, parish ministry, and hospital chaplaincy.  Students who enter ministerial careers find that the non-STM degree better prepares them for the particular challenges of Christian ministry in the world. Those who enter fields beyond standard ecclesial ministry find the STM's M.A. degrees to be a vital asset to their careers.  Engaging the needs of the whole person is an integral part of this program.
