The findings of this study seek to provide timely resources for pastoral leaders and academics to assess the Church’s response to the Hispanic presence in parishes, important contributions of Hispanics to the U.S. Catholic experience, and key areas of ministry where the Church in the U.S. must invest now to remain vibrant in the twenty-first century.
About the Study
The study was conducted between 2011 and 2013 under the leadership of Hosffman Ospino, Ph.D., assistant professor of Hispanic ministry and religious education at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry.
The parishes involved constitute 25% of all Catholic parish communities in the country. The population of Hispanic Catholics, currently 40% of all U.S. Catholics, is anticipated to continue expanding in the coming decades.
The study focuses on four main areas:
- Impact of the Hispanic presence in Catholic parish dynamics, with particular attention to models of organization and strategies to better evangelize in the context of a culturally diverse church.
- Leadership structures and needs to better support pastoral agents serving in Catholic parishes with Hispanic ministry.
- Initiatives, commitments, and resources to advance faith formation among Hispanic Catholics at various age levels in parishes.
- Diocesan structures supporting Hispanic ministry and the relationship of these structures with parishes serving Hispanic Catholics.
