Nine STM Students Ordained to the Diaconate
school of theology and ministry
Chestnut Hill, Mass. (10/12/13) -- The Blessed Peter Faber Jesuit Community and the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer celebrated the ordinations of nine men to the diaconate on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at St. Ignatius Church in Chestnut Hill. Cardinal Seán Patrick O'Malley, OFM Cap. presided at Saturday's liturgy and served as the ordaining bishop.
All nine men are current students at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry (STM), where they are completing their theological and ministerial training. The newly ordained deacons pictured with Cardinal O’Malley and their formators are (from top left to bottom right): Christopher P. Johnson, S.J., Mario M. Powell, S.J., David K. Verghese, C.Ss.R., Robert E. Murphy, S.J., Thomas M. Simisky, S.J., Samuel J. Sawyer, S.J., Paul J. Shelton, S.J., Nathan C. Wendt, S.J., Michael D. Rozier, S.J., Rev. James G. Gartland, S.J., Cardinal Seán Patrick O'Malley, OFM Cap., Rev. Denis Sweeney, C.Ss.R., Very Rev. Raymond Collins, C.Ss.R. The newly ordained will graduate from the STM with a Master of Divinity (M.Div.). The deacons will also complete a Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) or a Master of Theology (Th.M.) upon their graduation.
Lay and religious members of the STM community participated in various liturgical ministries during the celebration. The St. Ignatius Choir as well as members of the STM Liturgical Choir combined to provide the music for the liturgy. The congregation of approximately six hundred included family members of the ordained, members of the Boston College Jesuit and Redemptorist communities, students, faculty and staff of the STM, parishioners of St. Ignatius Church, and members of the greater Boston College community.
