History and Structure
roy adaptation association
The Roy Adaptation Association, formerly known as Boston Based Adaptation Research in Nursing Society, began in 1991 when a small group of scholars presented a symposium on research based on the Roy Model at the Council of Nurse Researcher meeting in Los Angeles. Each investigator had been using the RAM to guide her individual work. The investigators believed that a synthesis of findings would be particularly productive and noted that when the studies were viewed collectively, new insights about theoretical and empiric relationships emerged. The group began meeting frequently, often in Boston, but at other locations as well. One publication followed another, and multiple presentations were made in the USA and several other countries. Other scholars joined the core group based on interest and expertise related to particular projects in progress. The question of opening up BBARNS to general membership was raised as early as 1994. However, by that time the core group had embarked upon, and were totally engrossed in, a five-year project of analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of the first 25 years of research based on the Roy Adaptation Model. Having published this research monograph, the Core Group met again to consider the need, reflected in extensive written and e-mail correspondence with the theorist, for expanding BBARNS membership. Levels of membership were established and Interest Forums set up in November 1999.
