Nurses call the shots at Relay for Life

Connell News

20 members of the Connell School of Nursing raised money and participated in the Relay for Life

The student nurses at this year’s Relay for Life definitely called the shots. The CSON Nursing Senate and Student Nurses’ Association collaborated to form a team of over 20 members to spend 12 hours together in honor of those who have been touched by cancer. Together we raised over $800 to donate to the American Cancer Society.

That evening that quickly turned into morning in the Plex Recreation Center was filled with engaging performances by Synergy and Fuego and moving a capella songs by the Dynamics during the breathtaking luminaria ceremony. Raffle tickets were sold for baskets that were donated by clubs, restaurants, and shops around Boston. We thought it was necessary to donate our own basket, so the Connell School of Nursing assembled a “Get Well Soon” basket. In this consisted of a CSON tote, sunscreen, Chapstick, Band-Aids, ACE bandages, ice packs, tissues, and other health accessories necessary to any college student. Competitive sports tournaments, from basketball to volleyball, kept students energized and awake all night long. At one point, I glanced around the track and saw nothing but smiling faces of students dressed in green, orange, and white Relay t-shirts.

This year, Boston College’s Relay for Life alone raised over $145,000 and counting for the American Cancer Society, bringing students together for one of the largest school-wide events of the year. Spending twelve hours together in the Plex in order to honor friends, family, and colleagues epitomized Boston College’s mission of “men and women for others.” It was a beautiful sight and we were happy to be a part of it.
