Melissa Sutherland, Connell School assistant professor, will join McLean Hospital as a visiting scholar to advance work on a project entitled “A Study of the Factors of Metabolic Syndrome.” The study will examine factors of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk in patients with a history of psychiatric hospitalization.

The research team, which also includes Connell School Associate Professor Angela Amar and School of Nursing alumna Paula Bolton M.S. ’83, has a long-term goal of developing an intervention model for patients at risk of metabolic syndrome.

“This is an important clinical area of study,” says Sutherland. “In addition to the opportunity to advance health, I’m also very excited about research collaboration between Boston College and McLean Hospital.”

Located in Belmont, Massachusetts, McLean Hospital is a comprehensive psychiatric hospital as well as a major teaching facility of Harvard Medical School. The hospital maintains the largest program of research in neuroscience and psychiatry of any private psychiatric institution in the United States.

Melissa Sutherland joined the faculty of the Connell School of Nursing in 2009 after working as a nurse practitioner in an STI clinic in Binghamton, New York. Her research focuses on violence against women and the health consequences of violence.
