Jennie Chin Hansen talks about health care reform

AARP president and School of Nursing alumna Jennie Chin Hansen, RN, MS, FAAN, '70, H '08 visited the Connell School on Friday, April 9 to speak about health care reform. Hansen’s remarks came only weeks after President Barack Obama signed into law sweeping health care reform in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Students, faculty, and staff from across the University came to hear Hansen address such topics as health care costs, preventative medicine, so-called death panels, and the public option. In each section of her talk, she stressed the importance of preventative care, transparency, and accountability in health care.

A registered nurse who has a master's degree in nursing, Hansen holds an appointment as senior fellow at the Center for the Health Professions at the University of California, San Francisco, and consults with various foundations. She transitioned to teaching in 2005 after nearly 25 years at On Lok, most recently as its executive director. On Lok, Inc., is a nonprofit family of organizations providing community-based services in San Francisco. Hansen serves in various leadership roles, including commissioner of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission and member of the boards of the National Academy of Social Insurance, Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellows Program, and SCAN Foundation. She is a past president of the American Society on Aging.

Hansen also spoke to the William F. Connell School of Nursing’s Diversity Advisory Board during her visit, and delivered the keynote address at the sold-out conference “Living the Journey: Spirituality for the Second Half of Life” sponsored by the Boston College Alumni Association on Saturday, April 10. She was awarded an honorary degree from Boston College in 2008.
