Connell School student Margaret O'Connor, class of 2010, has recently begun her summer internship at the Bedford Veteran's Administration (VA) Hospital. The Bedford VA was selected as a site for the VA Learning Onsite Residencies (VALOR) program, a unique initiative that provides nursing students the opportunity to gain experience and exposure to the VA healthcare environment. Over the span of 10 weeks, students are assigned to different clinical units and rotate through specialties including long term care, acute and chronic psychiatry, primary care, and Alzheimer's care. The students are assigned to a preceptor/mentor and participate in classroom activities that enhance their understanding of current issues in health care. After just three weeks, Margaret reports that she has gained valuable experience, especially in the area of acute psychiatry, and she is grateful for the opportunity to care for our country's veterans.
