Graduate student receives scholarship, shares her nursing story

Graduate student Kathryn Phillips was honored with the Matilda Goddard Scholarship for career advancement by Goddard House, a nonprofit organization that offers elders a range of care options including housing and medical services. Phillips was asked to share the story of her journey to nursing, the text of which is featured on their website. 

Students raise over $4000 for diabetes research

The Connell School chapter of the national Student Nurses Association (SNA) raised over $4000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation during the Walk for Diabetes in October, the most the SNA has raised for any event to date. 

Alumnae/i, faculty member inducted as AAN fellows

Six out of the 92 American Academy of Nursing (AAN) fellows inducted in 2008 were Connell School alumnae/i, including one faculty member.

Professor of Adult Health Dorothy Jones and Professor Emeritus Marjory Gordon both received the Mentor's Award, the highest honor presented by the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA International). 

Doctoral student receives grants for genetic research

Doctoral student Patricia Underwood was awarded two grants for her work to find genetic markers for insulin resistance in patients with hypertension.   

Coat drive helps hundreds stay warm in Mattapan

Daley elected to American Nursing Association Board of Directors

During the American Nurses Association (ANA) Biennial House of Delegates meeting this past June, Karen Daley, a doctoral student at the Connell School, was elected to serve a two-year term on the ANA Board of Directors. 

Carol Marchetti attends summer research program in Switzerland

Carol Marchetti, a Connell School PhD candidate, was awarded a grant to attend a one-week intensive practice-oriented research training course for doctoral students in advanced quantitative design and statistical analysis in the health science fields of nursing, public health, and medicine.

Jennifer Allen, assistant professor of community health nursing has been appointed co chair of a national committee on the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine for the Center for Disease Control's Cancer Prevention & Control Research Network. 

Dean Hazard receives service award from NACNS

Barbara Hazard, dean of the Connell School of Nursing, received the Sue B. Davidson Service Award from the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS) in March 2008.

Barbara Wolfe chosen as work group member to develop DSM-V

Barbara Wolfe, professor and director of the Center for Nursing Research, has been selected by the American Psychiatric Association to serve as a work group member to help develop the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V), the foremost manual used worldwide by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals to diagnose mental disorders.

Connell School dean named

Boston College has named Susan Gennaro, the Florence and William Downs Professor in Nursing Research in the College of Nursing at New York University, the next dean of the William F. Connell School of Nursing.   

Olivieri and Stockbridge recognized for innovative teaching methods

Rita Olivieri, associate professor of adult health nursing, and Jennifer Stockbridge, community health clinical instructor, were awarded the Academic Innovative Teaching Award from the Massachusetts Association of Colleges of Nursing (MACN).

Students return to Nicaragua with Global Health Initiative

The Global Health Initiative of the Connell School of Nursing made its second service-learning trip to Nicaragua February 29 to March 9 during spring break. Ronna Krozy and Joyce Pulcini, Connell School faculty, led the trip along with Kathy Lee from the romance languages department.

June Horowitz was awarded the Susan Feetham Nurse Scientist Family Research Award, given by the Eastern Nursing Research Society (ENRS).   

Ann Burgess receives funding from the Department of Justice

Connell School Professor Ann Burgess is co-primary investigator on a collaborative grant project with the Justice Resource Institute and Villanova University, with the goal of reducing online sexual victimization of children and adolescents. 

Ph.D. student Sandy Hannon-Engel awarded NIH research funding

Sandy Hannon-Engel, a doctoral student in the Connell School of Nursing, has been awarded a National Research Service Award (NRSA), for her project entitled "Role of Altered CCK Response in Bulimia Nervosa."

Roy, Hazard honored by MARN

The Massachusetts Association of Registered Nurses (MARN) has announced that it will honor Barbara Hazard, dean of the Connell School, and Sr. Callista Roy, professor and nurse theorist, at the upcoming MARN awards ceremony on Friday, April 25 at the Dedham Hilton Hotel in Dedham, Massachusetts.
