Alum Recieves Award for Advancing Forensic Nursing

Rachel Boersma, PhD '05, was recently awarded the International Association of Forensic Nurses Achivement Award at this IAFN's recent Scientific Assembly in Salt Lake City, Utah, for significant contributions made in the advancement of the scientific practice of Forensic Nursing through research and publications.
Dr. Boerma's private practice centers on her very active work with international victims of torture. Qualified by the Federal Court since 2000, Dr. Boersma is the first and only registered nurse approved as a Federal Court Expert and Clincial Evaluator of Victims of Torture and Persecution Seeking Asylum in the US. Also active internationally with victims of torture, Dr. Boersma participated in the United Nations site visit to Kenya in 2005 as a representative for Physicians for Human Rights. Dr. Boersma is currently in the Ukraine working with legal and also a forensic consultant for the Animal Legal Defense Fund in cases of suspected sexual abuse of animals. Dr. Boersma was re-elected president of the Greater New England Chapter of the IAFN in January 2007. Dr. Boersma received a three-year university fellowship to Boston College, passed her comprehensive exams with distinction, and had been listed in Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare since 2000. Dr. Boersma has written numerous articles on forensic nursing.
